movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Compliance - 9/10
I wasn't sure what to expect, but it's wonderfully well written, directed, and acted.
Great study of the awful things people do to each other, and how easily people can be controlled by "authority figures."

Compliance was fantastic. Glad to see someone else enjoyed it. It got great critical reviews but apparently much more of a mixed bag with the public, a lot of people walked out of screenings and such. It's pretty tough to criticize the movie, as it's basically 100% factual, and the acting was incredible. Ann Dowd was brilliant.

Last movie I saw? Groundhog Day. 9/10, it's a classic.

Robot and Frank. 8.6/10 They did a wonderful job with this simple concept, even with a budget of 2.5mil. Well worth seeing. Sci-fi Drama.

Stand Up Guys. 6.5/10. I quite enjoyed this movie. Al Pacino is released from prison, on his first night hitting the town with his friend, who coincidentally is contracted to kill him. Don't expect a deep and meaningful movie, just a bit of fun.

Pitch Perfect. 7/10. Musical. You probably all know about this movie already. Turn your mind off and tap your foot on the ground as you enjoy the drama filled world of acapella, performing cover songs where you have to do the instruments with your mouths. A surprisingly enjoyable movie.

Red Dawn 2012. 1/10. Action / Sleeping Pill. I'm sure the reason this sucked so bad is it is a remake of a remake of a remake, probably of a remake. It was poorly strung together story with a bunch of characters you never really cared about.

Zero Dark Thirty. 7/10. Suspense. I like spy movies. They are one of my weak spots. It's low on action but I still really enjoyed it.

Deadfall. 2.5/10. Crime Drama. You know, I don't really remember it that well. I do remember I didn't enjoy it.

Next. 2007 with Nicholas Cage & Jesica Biel. 5/10. It had a lot of potential though it felt like it ended in the middle of act 2. The whole concept of the lead that can see 2 minutes into the future and how they pulled it off was decent.

Officer Down. 3/10. Crime Drama. No real likable characters, no one to relate to filled with a story that had a lot more potential than was delivered. It could have been great but fell well short.

Angel of Death. 2/10. Action. Steven Segal. Low budget where he's part of some team hunting terrorists to prevent a nuclear bomb. It might have been something that I enjoyed as a teenager along with American Ninja.

HOTEL - Described appropriately as "the tension of Haneke and the visuals of Lynch". Beautifully shot and paced but the apathetic characters and lack of resolution could displease many. I really enjoyed it though. 7.5/10

The Hobbit - 8/10. Didn't know when 3h flew by and wanted more. Didn't like the dwarf design that much since they didn't looked like dwarfs, they showed too much of Azog, too little of Radagast. Throrin is the opposite of Aragorn and I could not care less if he died at the end and also eagles again.

James Bond Skyfall - 6/10. I love James Bond but this was bad. I know I am not in the majority but no. Just no. And they tried to pull a Joker in the villain but they failed terribly. And why make such a dumb plan as a genius villain? No. Just no.

The eagles were probably the worst part for me, they were the one CGI element that just jumped right out at me and screamed FAKE...

Strangely enough Skyfall is the first Bond that I enjoyed.

Silver Linings Playbook 7/10

Awkwardly I thought it was going to be more of a comedy than it actually was, but the acting was pretty great I thought. I disliked the football, never been a big fan of American football.

And I didn't mind seeing Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Stiles in the same film haha :P

The Perks of Being A Wallflower - 9 out of 10. Nicely done movie about a high school freshman who had a breakdown after his best friend committed suicide, and whose new friends are struggling with a range of issues including an openly gay teen in a hidden relationship w/a popular football player.

Resident Evil: Retribution - 5/10
See it if you must follow the franchise, otherwise it's missable.
I thought the "lets move and act like the real video game characters move" was... interesting.

Dredd - 6/10
Definitely NOT a remake. Different story of the same character.
The production was fairly well done.
You know how Nolan brought a seriousness to the fun 80's Batman film franchise?
Whatsisname did it here and I'm just not impressed with that whole genre attempt.
This isn't fun. It borders on hokey.
If you wanna watch a bunch of people fighting in a building I'd suggest The Raid: Redemption as better entertainment.

21 Jump Street - 10/10
Yep, watched it again. Laughed my @ss off again.

Seeking a Friend For The End Of The World - 5/10
Kiera Knightly is nice to look at, sorta. Otherwise missable.
If you wanna watch two people bond in a social study I'd suggest Safety Not Guaranteed as better entertainment.

Logan's Run - 6/10
I wonder just how much smarter people are today or did this look like cr@p back in 1976?
I also wonder just how bad some of the current "good" scifi movies will look in retrospect three decades later.
Sorry to see the remake crashed and burned in pre-production.

The Dark Knight Rises - 7/10
Meh... you probably should go see this disjointed... thing.
The development of Robin was askew, but...

House at the End of the Street - 4/10
Totally missable, but fairly well executed.

The Bourne Legacy - 7/10
Meh... you probably should go see it.
Interesting new lease on the franchise.

The Hobbit 3D 48fps - 8/10
Amazing visuals from a set and character creation POV.
The difference in production quality from the LOTR trilogy was remarkable.
The story kinda drags along which is amazing since there's so much material jammed in there and easily defends the decision to make one book into three films.
The 48fps looked fine to me. I have no idea what any of the complaining was about.

Timecrimes - 7.3/10
I felt like they could have pushed it even further with the timetravel stuff, but it was still good.

Primer - 7/10
Watched it for the fourth time, still don't think I got absolutely everything at the end. Great concept but one of the downfalls is the complexity, because even though you could argue that only 'dumb' people wouldn't like the movie, it takes it a little too far and leaves too much up to you to figure out. A movie's job is still to make sure that the audience understands what is going on. Still really like the style though.

The Bourne Legacy - 6.5/10
Well done, but the story just seemed like too much of a rehash. I feel like it wasn't nearly as creative and new as it should have been. Bourne is about ingenuity and intelligence mixed with fighting, but I didn't see much of that in the action. And the chase scene? Way too long....

The Flowers of War - 8/10
I don't know why the critics didn't like this. I thought it was really good. I cried like 4 times, haha. Some good acting from Christian Bale and a pretty good Asian cast as well.

Two of my absolute favourite timetravel films. Love them both. Timecrimes is beautifully simple, Primer totally the other way... convincingly complex..which I prefer to having some banal explanation that a 5year old could grasp.

Dancer In the Dark - Oh Bjork you are so beguiling I could watch you all day long!! 8.5/10

True, I do like how realistic Primer makes time travel look. It would be interesting to see if Shane Carruth had intentionally made it too complex for most viewers just to get that realistic feeling, I mean come on....Time travel can get pretty crazy. And it also lends itself to the feeling that they must be going through, how everything just moves so fast and their heads are trying to wrap around all the implications.

I read somewhere that the guys in the film were real life scientists but a quick google doesn't prove anything to back that up except that Director/Actor Shane Carruth studied physics when writing it. But does seem he went for real life Physics jargon and terminology over simplification for audience benefit... Prefer that than say the way in Looper handled it ... "don't think about it too much..."

..and it was made for $7000 :hmm:

Gonna have to rewatch it soon!!

Skid Row - 7/10 - not a bad social commentary, though some points seemed to be pretty fake (or Pras was seriously delusional from his time on the streets) but still was good overall

Troubled Water - 8.5/10 - a fantastic film that had been sitting in my Netflix queue forever (goes off after tomorrow) and I am glad I finally saw it. I apparently have a better opinon of it than someone on IMDB...

VHS - 6/10 - eh, didnt really do much for me - actually wish that there were some questions answered and wish that some of the "films" were actually better.

Paranormal Activity 4 - 5/10
Ho hum, more of the same.
Watch it if you must keep up with the franchise, but if you're interested in quitting PA3 is as good a place as any so you can quit there.

The Tempest - 3/10
If you just lovvvvvve Shakespeare then you're good! Otherwise, you probably have something else better to do even though this looks pretty good.
It's like a jr. Tarsem Singh without the interesting-ness he brings to his set designs.

Artificial Intelligence - 4/10
I really wanna like this, but I just can't stand the mom's mental health bullsh!t.
And the rest seems just kinda ad hoc.

The Cave - 2/10
Just... watch something else. This is stupid.

National Treasure & National Treasure: Book of Secrets - 9/10 & 6/10
First one is well paced, fun, and interesting.
Sequel has all the right parts, but just doesn't seem as much fun as the first.

The Hobbit (1977 Rankin/Bass version) - 7/10
If you can't take your under-thirteen year old to the P.Jackson version, this'll satisfy your elementary schoolers. ;)

Hobo With A Shotgun - 6/10
If you like the grindhouse genré then this is fine, if you don't (and I don't) then this thankfully has just enough absurdity in it to mildly amusing. Very mildly.

It's not very often I get to see docos on the big screen, so it was nice to see one for a change. That said, it kinda felt like I was at a film festival rather than an actual movie screening, perhaps because festivals tend to be the only places I get to see docos on the big screen.

The subject matter is a bizarre tale, and it is riveting. It looks really nice - looks like most of it was shot on RED, with only one interview sourcing from something lesser (possibly a DSLR). It's humorous at times, creepy at other times and all-round just strange (the subject matter, not the filmmaking).

I don't think it will be in cinemas for long, and I can't see it getting a huge audience (do doco's ever get a huge audience at the cinema?), but if you get a chance, go and see it. Might find it's way to television eventually

7/10

American Mary - 7/10

Very strange film... interesting, but strange. The story is the very definition of indie, the limited plot doesn't really follow the standard path that you'd expect from a horror (if that actually what it is) and the main character doesn't really have any moral standing, or any idea of who she actually is. Still, some great performances and some nice cinematography cerrainly make this a worthwhile watch.

Adrift - 5/10 - eh, a run of the mill female coming of age story. The saving grace was the location where it was set - will have to save up some money to visit.

Goodfellas - 8/10 Great film, though contrary to popular opinion, not as good as Casino. Ray Liotta bores me to death, and his wife is no Sharon Stone. I've always found the ending too abrupt for my liking, but I understand why Marty wanted it that why.

The Departed -10/10 I know what you must be thinking, a perfect score for Departed and only an 8 for Goodfellas? Yup. Aside from some questionable audio/visual cuts, this film never dissapoints. I know how it ends, and yet, always find myself in suspense during the last act. I can't say enough good things about this film.

The Master - 10/10 A perfect film. Amazing cinematography, amazing performances. I have to rewatch TWBB again to confirm, but I think this is P.T.'s masterpiece, giving boogie nights a run for my favorite P.T.A. film.

Requiem for a Dream - 8/10 Utterly depressing, and it hits close to home for me. Every time I watch it (not very often, i like to wait a while in between viewings) I hold out hope for the main characters. to this day one of my favorite scenes is the "Oh shit! You got a white driver." scene.
