> VOD Indie Film Distribution Exploration

Alright, with grrrrreat reluctance I'm beginning a new thread with my investigation notes about video-on-demand.
I wanted to just attach it to the other thread as a minor tangent, but this just keeps getting hairier and hairier demanding it's own thread. Sorry :(

Although this first post is a C&P regurgitation of the last info from another thread subsequent posts will highlight boiled down items of interest.
(IOW, there's a big difference between writing copy to fill collumn inches and writing to slam home crude education - which is my preferred approach: "Ten words or less. What?!"

Subsequent posts will examine individual articles begining with that FilmThreat Going Bionic series.

Have fun. :)

Another interesting VOD article:
Dated - Fall 2009 http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/issues/fall2009/industry-beat.php

By all accounts, the most successful VOD films fall into one of a few categories, horror-thrillers (Dark Mirror, Magnolia's Surveillance or The Mutant Chronicles), sexy stuff (like some of IFC's racy French fare) or star-studded comedies (IFC's I Hate Valentine's Day, starring the leads from My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

"The films working on cable VOD are going to be the films that people want to watch with other people, things that are provocative, either from a violence or stylish sense, or a titillating standpoint,"

It appears that if you can skip the dubious expense of a questionable theatrical release, the title and description are intriguing enough, that VOD only distribution may be fairly viable.

Surprisingly some filmmakers are ending up in better fiscal shape by bypassing the theatrical route. Joe Swanberg says the VOD performance for his latest film, Alexander the Last, was similar to his previous Hannah Takes the Stairs. Both were released on IFC with grosses around $250,000. But Alexander may turn out to be significantly more profitable because the higher expenses associated with Hannah's theatrical release ate up all of its VOD proceeds.

And another "more" current article:
Dated - Jun 29, 2010 http://www.filmthreat.com/features/22975/

Finding a way to get your film noticed can be as hard, or harder, than finding the money to make your film in the first place. Of course having certain elements like a notable cast and a “bionic” genre (i.e. action, sci-fi and thriller) will certainly help. But, you should have a clear idea about who your audience is and how you can exploit your product to them through the correct V.O.D. platform.

2) People under the age of 25 buy most of the content sold to cell phones.

Since most contracts with V.O.D. suppliers are non-exclusive, your distributor should exploit your film to multiple suppliers. Let me just clarify that point: Your contract with your distributor is always exclusive, but their contract with V.O.D. suppliers is usually non-exclusive. This means you can have your film available to multiple V.O.D. suppliers if it makes sense to do so.

Cool. There's a series: http://www.filmthreat.com/page/7/?s="going+bionic"

Another informative "definitions of VOD" article:

Good Lord.
The amount of data to learn on this subject is... deep enough to drown in.
Looks like a chock-load of undated FREE RESOURCES in that first left column block: http://www.filmspecific.com/public/main.cfm

I think this is enough to keep me busy for a week.
(BTW, did I ever tell you guys that the reason I got interested in filmmaking is because I DON'T like reading anymore, especially when a book takes six or more hours to convey what a film can do in under two hours? And what am I doing a sh!t load of now? Yuk yuk yuk. Life is funny).

Consider this chart a work in progress.
I believe it covers the bulk of what's available.

Vudu is owned by Walmart?!
Well... ain't that interesting.

And they're expanding global coverage, too!
Kuuuuuule.

"The U.S. retail behemoth is expected to make Mexico the first overseas home for Vudu in June ahead of a bigger deployment across Latin America that could encompass over 30 countries. Vudu will also enter parts of Europe and Asia later in the year."

I've updated the "VOD Aggregators & Venues" chart only a little, and ran across the following somewhat interesting statement-article:
http://www.3vision.tv/opinions_10.html

The company, 3Vision, is primarily a core independent filmmaker consultancy group, but their position on the future of VOD seems sensible.

On the lower right side of their "Opinions" page are additional... opinions. :)

>> Someone remind me to go hunting down online these guys:
"Filmmaker/marketers like Gary Hustwit, Lance Weiler, Tiffany Shlain and others have shown the way to create demand via their own efforts and investment. Peter Broderick is shepherding rights holders through a hybrid strategy that teaches careful allocation of specific rights to companies that are highly specialized, with the goal of maximizing the revenue a filmmaker keeps."

Appreciate your work, Ray.
Gonna catch up on this thread soon, might be some stuff I haven't heard of buried in here.
Thanks, Kholi
After you've dug through a fair bit of it will you please let me know what sort of bias or angle you'd like to see me convey these what-the-cat-drug-in articles and excerpts.
Am I skimming the cream, or do I seem to be just being a little tooooo random?
Whatchu wanna see more of, indie VOD-wise?
Thank you.

Hmm... $12 and $22k are juuuuust a skosh outta my casual price range.
How can I weasel some data outta these guys - or their competitors... ? Hmm...

Cool find, Morris!
Another interesting lead to follow!
Sooper kool!

The banner ad turns to Netflix whenever I view this thread... Well played google.

I attended a seminar at NAB with the guy that's the head of acquisitions for Netflix talking about the current state of play and their new original shows coming out. The way he's talking, they're much more interested in shows, or "long form serialized entertainment" than movies because that's what people use their online service most to view. They then brought out actors/writers/directors for several of their upcoming shows and they talked about the freedom and new challenges in launching a full "season" at once. Eli Roth said it's almost like doing an eight hour movie. The Arrested Development team was happy about being able to tell a single story over exactly how many episodes they needed for it instead of having to accommodate networks wanting a few shows at a time or stalling then wanting 12 episodes immediately.

The way he talked and from their numbers (that he didn't share) was that people like having 8-80 hours to bond with their favorite characters and the freedom to progress the story at their pace. Some binge watch an entire season in a day, others spread it out once a night or once a week.

Not sure what that means for movies, or for pay-per-view/online sales/online rentals of 90 minute features. It is a different service than a subscription based one like Netflix and I'm sure a slightly different audience. It was an interesting conversation though, and seeing my buddy ask David Cross during the Q&A if he'd had a chance to see the Blue Man Group there in Vegas was pretty great haha.

Internet to surpass DVD in movie consumption, not revenue
March 23, 2012
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ent...ass-dvd-in-movie-consumption-not-revenue.html
"The number of movies rented or bought online from outlets like Netflix and iTunes will grow 135% this year to 3.4 billion, according to IHS Screen Digest. But the research firm said people will spend only $1.72 billion on digital movies, compared to $11.1 billion on DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

In total, online stores and services will account for 57% of movie consumption in 2012, but only 12% of spending.

... Netflix and smaller competitors like Amazon.com and Hulu accounted for 94% of online movie consumption in 2011. Digital purchases accounted for only 1.3%"

Netflix et al = 94% of online movie consumption.

THAT is a sobering statistic.

A. Consider that if you even want your film shown on any "off Broadway" venue it very much likely won't even be looked for, let alone viewed, double let alone paid for.
B. Consider that if 94% of viewership generates 12% of spending that a DIY film studio/producer's revenue prospects are essentially less than that 12%.
C. Netflix is the WalMart of online sales/views, thus crushing your revenue dreams as they squeeze your rights so thin you ask "What's the point, if not for love of filmmaking?"

Keep your production costs down and quality high.

Wow.
It has been quite a while since I've made a meaningful contribution to this thread.
Anyways...

After my forum friend Nick posted his situation with what to do with 'Flight of the Flamingo' now that it's had its final edit my mind kept recycling back to the (seemingly) unrespected, if not completely disregarded, aspect of indie filmmaking: distribution.

Well above the fine quality indie filmmaker work Troma Entertainment represents, Gravitas Ventures is a name I associate with carrying titles that I don't see being shown at Sundance Film Festival being picked up for distribution by what I would consider "low scrape" distributors, such as IFC, Anchor Bay, Magnet/Magnolia, Sony Pictures Classics, et al.

And if you flip over those DVD boxes of 20 horror films you'll see a company called Echo Bridge Home Entertainment which aggregates niché films for these "value" products.
Some more distributors to hunt down specs from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echo_Bridge_Home_Entertainment#See_also

I think these are interesting business models and have been increasingly thinking about what their purchasing criteria are.
What deliverables is it that they demad, both substantive and technical?

Anyway, I'll investigate that later, in all my spare time.

In the meanwhile, I ran across the following article, found it casually interesting, and thought I'd share: http://www.gravitasventures.com/the-wrap-gravitas-ceo-nolan-gallagher-on-the-changing-vod-market/

Also, just in case you were wondering how much VOD content provider competition Gravitas has for your indie film gem treasures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_on_demand_services
These are companies worth approaching with your finished products, although to bring in top dollar I'd consider contacting them before production.

Graeme - your cabin in the woods film comes to mind.
Nick - 'Heavy Lifting' also comes to mind.

Just in case you fellas might wanna at least consider tweaking your production to facilitate something "more" marketable.

EDIT: Found another distributor, Mill Creek Entertainment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mill_Creek_Entertainment
And looking into that I also ran across: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Home_video_companies_of_the_United_States
Sigh... quite a bit to go digging through.

Article deserves its own post:
Here’s the 6 Reasons Why You Don’t Know More About VOD Numbers
http://www.gravitasventures.com/ind...ons-why-you-dont-know-more-about-vod-numbers/
"In the meantime, filmmakers can do it for themselves. If companies won’t educate filmmakers about the revenue VOD generates, Marchetti suggested that producers should share that information amongst themselves.

“The one thing that I always preach is that filmmakers do eventually get their numbers, so the more they put that information out there, we can create a database of information,” he said. “If filmmakers can say, ‘This is exactly what I made,’ this will be able to help other filmmakers plan better, market better and cash-project better.”"
Anyone here have some numbers they're willing to volunteer?

And I'm tacking this one on as a rider:

Now, if you guys wanna start learning more and more about getting your product to market these are the sort of "stuff I never heard of" organizations and businesses we need to spend more time learning more about.

Not that learning about more tech and how to use it isn't important, it's just that there seems to be an abundance of interest on spending money trying to "tech our way out of a hole" and not enough interest on getting our products to market.

Spending money (and time) in filmmaking is really, really easy.
Making money in filmmaking is d@mn hard.

A sample of job descriptions at GoDigital:
(this isn't a promotion of their services, only a casual research finding)
  • CEO... oversees acquisitions, content operations and the overall release strategies for both new and catalog titles.
  • Acquisitions Coordinator... coordinates all films considered for distribution... works directly with clients to help track their titles and ensure their initial needs are met.
  • VP, Distribution & Merchandising... the operations team, client and platform relations, and the product management of all film releases... implement[ed] standardized process for preparing films for digital release.
  • Digital Marketing & Audience Strategy... heads all marketing initiatives at GoDigital... manages creative deliverables and works directly with clients on overall strategy and audience identification, as well as digital and social media marketing.
  • Director, Supply Chain Operations... oversees the product management team that prepares, edits, transcodes, packages, and delivers digital media to various cable VOD and iVOD service providers... also manages the delivery process from the client to the various platforms GoDigital works with.
  • Senior Product Manager... manages all video assets received from clients... maintains direct communication with the client’s technical contact and ensures that all films are quality-controlled for delivery.
  • Controller... responsible for client royalties, financial reporting and modeling, and maintaining internal controls.
  • Client Relations & Executive Assistant... the central point of contact for the distribution process, alongside a wide assortment of general information. As the administrator of GoDigital’s online dashboard... ensures that clients can seamlessly track the movement of their title(s) out into the marketplace.
These ARE NOT roles almost EVER discussed around here.

When I see (p!ss) threads questioning...
Here are some of the common positions I truly do not understand about making a film and it's also an excuse to pay more people money in my opinion...

I'm not this rebellious person wanting to do everything my own greedy way I just simply think that there isn't a huge need for excessive crew members on set. I also feel more at ease when it's just me with a few cast members. The set is quiet and feels more desolate and it gives me more time to inspire my actors/actresses.
... I can't help but also wonder if most all the creative folks here focussing on developing content to the best of their creative and financial limits seem to likewise discredit or pooh-pooh the jobs of those that are supposed to get our products to market.

Anybody here wanna share their distinct overall strategy and audience identification, as well as digital and social media marketing processes? And results?
Anybody here wanna share their specs to prepare, edit, transcode, package, and deliver their film's digital media to various cable VOD and iVOD service providers?
Anybody here wanna describe their experiences using accounting software to track viewings, royalties, and/or financial reporting?

Not enough, IMHO.

Let's discuss more about what happens AFTER we make a film.

I made a movie. Will you sell it?

International Horror Film Distribution
Submit Your Film For Distribution Consideration
We are always accepting submissions of feature films for distribution. Film submissions should include a DVD screener along with a press kit and/or any other materials and should be sent to our corporate office at the address below. Any materials sent to us will not be returned unless specifically requested and accompanied by return postage. We reserve the right to refuse comment on any submission.

Click here for a listing of some of the exciting platforms and outlets our distribution can reach.

What We're Looking For
Length:

Feature films greater than 65 minutes in length. Compilations of short stories or films are acceptable as an anthology film.

Genre and Content:
We specifically license and represent horror films, though we will also review films in the action, thriller, suspense, or dark drama genres.

Production Value:
Medium to high production value. This includes the audio/visual quality of the feature as well as the acting, directing, script, and overall presentation. We firmly believe that a film's budget is not always the best indicator of its value.

Broadcastability:
Please keep in mind that should your film be licensed we have strict guidelines regarding the materials that must be delivered to us in order to distribute for your film. These requirements include a broadcast-quality, uncompressed or high quality digital master in NTSC SD or HD format.
Though not required, providing us with separate M&E (Music & Effects) audio tracks without any dialog will allow us to sell your film internationally.

If we're interested in acquiring your film for distribution you'll be contacted by our director of acquisitions. Please note that due to the high volume of submissions we receive we can't guarantee any sort of time frame for a response. If you have any questions feel free to contact us.
