How knowledgeable should directors be in cinematography?

OP here! Reading these responses was very interesting. People seem to have different opinions on what sort of technical knowledge directors should possess, but that's alright. A new question: for directors who are just starting out in the true independent bracket, how feasible is it to hire a...

How knowledgeable should directors be in cinematography?

Cinematographers - how knowledgeable/proficient should directors be in cinematography? What about at the professional level, when larger budgets are involved? How about the indie level, when directors are making films on micro budgets (and probably won't be able to afford an experienced/well...

    Ah well - I forgive ya :)

Why can you edit some posts, but not others?

Alright. Thank you. Just for future reference, is there any way to re-open the editing window on certain posts? I'm assuming mods can help someone with this. Also, I think the editing policy on Indietalk is great. A lot of forums close the window after 10 minutes, and that can be stressful...

Why can you edit some posts, but not others?

Why is it that some posts/threads you created still have the editing option up, while others don't? Edit: anyone?

What are some CA cities with strong independent filmmaking scenes (other than LA)?

This is great to hear. To be honest, at this point the idea of saving money by heading off to community college for the first two years, meeting people interested in film there (and through clubs/the theater department), and investing money in some starter equipment is becoming more and more...

What are some CA cities with strong independent filmmaking scenes (other than LA)?

Thanks Directorik. Would you say SF is the only major city in Northern California with these kinds of opportunities? I'm not looking for internships or networking opportunities. I just want to be somewhere that I can meet people. If below the line jobs truly are as difficult to obtain as you...

What are some CA cities with strong independent filmmaking scenes (other than LA)?

I'm a high school senior, looking into what I should do after graduation. Right now, I'm entertaining the idea of going to a state school or UC, going to a community college to save money (this would automatically leave me at home), or biting the bullet and moving to Los Angeles. If I did make...

Article: "Film bosses accused of mutilating scripts and pushing out writing talent"

Article: "Film bosses accused of mutilating scripts and pushing out writing talent" I saw this article on The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jan/09/screenwriters-heavy-handed-script-editing-pushing-talent-out-of-film The article was essentially talking about how many...

How's the social climate of film school?

I'm planning on going to college this upcoming fall. While I'm not going to major in film, I do plan on taking a few film production courses (or even minoring in film) so I can efficiently work on my filmmaking part time during college, because film is still my number one interest. Even though...

Would you say film schools/programs are "cliquey"?

Where did you meet these "filmmakers" (or the real filmmakers you eventually replaced these "filmmakers" with)? Was it at college? Or was it through local filmmaking groups/the internet? or, did you have a couple of regular friends who just happened to be interested in film? :)

Would you say film schools/programs are "cliquey"?

I completely agree. I have always been - and will always be - strongly against schools like USC or NYU that bleed students dry. Even though I plan on majoring in something non-film related, I still find the idea of a $1,000 community college film program enticing. My only concern is that in a...

Would you say film schools/programs are "cliquey"?

I may buck up the courage to do that (although it almost seems like asking strangers to be in the short would be less intimidating than asking someone you know). It might be different for guys, but I know most of my friends can be very camera shy! If anything, I was hoping attending...

Would you say film schools/programs are "cliquey"?

I was actually originally attracted to the idea of being able to take classes with a more diverse group - I feel like the students at a community college would bring new and fresh perspectives to classes (especially art classes), as opposed to a traditional university where most of the students...

Would you say film schools/programs are "cliquey"?

I appreciate the suggestion (really), but I don't think that's the route for me. I'd like to be a writer/director, so handing off projects to someone else would defeat the purpose of what I'm trying to do.
