When Does The Composer Get Involved in Film Making

I am curious as to when, generally, the composer is involved in the process of film making?

Is general direction and mood discussed with the composer pre-production, or is it during post-production when you first dialog with the composer?

What are the factors involved that can dictate when you include the composer in the film making process?

It varies from director to director and project to project.

At the "well budgeted" level the post team - visual editing, CGI, audio post, score, etc. - is at least in the loop during preproduction even if they are not brought into meetings.

At the "Hollywood" budget level it's up to the director.

Down in the weeds at the low/no/mini/micro budget level most of the time the call goes out for score and audio post while the project is in editing.
