Web design…

Just a quickie… the website for the production company being set up with two friends is in production, and we've been discussing the various merits of each design, but we're yet to reach a unanimous decision. I'd really appreciate it if you could have a look at these two example pages and tell me which you prefer. I won't say who designed which or which one I prefer to keep it fair.

Design 1

Design 2

The website is for a new media production company, specialising in video (music promos, corporate and independent drama) but also working on web and graphic design and photography.

A couple of points of contention between the three of us: which looks most visually appealing, which looks most contemporary and which looks least home-made/amateur?

Cheers!

The body of the second one is too black, it needs to be broken up.

I like the first one (reminds me of The Clapper Bored *hint hint*) but I'm not sure. I feel like there's a more 'dynamic' design hiding behind these... but what do I know? :D

I'd go with design one but I would ditch the harsh colors. Make it warmer...maybe a heavier pastel green with lighter greens, browns/tans

#1
Rounded navigation tabs is definitely not contemporary, it mimics a free template.

#2
Edgier and contemporary.

I've had the bloggy looking thing on my home page for a long time and have gotten tons of compaints about it.

I like #1 (although I echo the templat-y feel of it).

which looks least home-made/amateur?

Neither one of them. Not just giving away free compliments. Honestly, they both look good.

However, if it were my site, I would want #1, strictly because I'm not a fan of reading light letters on dark back-drops. I once read somewhere that that strains the eyes, and I believe that to be true. So, for nothing other than the light backdrop and dark lettering, I prefer #1.

Yeah black on white/light is best. Some people go for the techy slick black look but that is not a good move.

If you go with #1 just fix up those rounded tabs. Since you're going for the button look with the play button continue that theme. Square them off and copy some DVD/camera button icons, etc.

Chilipie.

I think you have to create a better visual image than either of them delivers. What you are trying to sell is your ability to create great visual images to clients and I don't think these create a good impression.

If you haven't got the $ to get a professional then try and find a student trying to build a portfolio.

Also I'd for an an electric blue over fuscia.

Let us know when you go live so we can check out the final design.

I prefer #1. They're both neat. Remind me a little of the querky "E4" layout. Which, for the majority, is for the 25 and below age bracket, audience to "Skins" or "Misfits". They're pretty bold.

However, If there's a Web Design professional offering advice. I'd pull my ears back, and catch all the advice I could. You guys should work something out.

IT "mates rates"? :)

I don't remember the source I read this on, but if memory serves me correctly, the absolute worst text/background color-combination is black on pukey-light-orange.

;)

Cheers guys, lots of interesting comments! I'll let you all know when the final site goes live.

I heard people pay just to see this :P
