I think you gave some excellent advice. Nicely done.
I'll be linking this a lot, I reckon. Lots of great thoughts in there, consolidated into a rapid package. 
Best bit of advice in there? Towards the end of it - Go watch short films! Watch hundreds of them! It's amazing how many wannabe short film filmmakers just aren't interested in the medium, at all.
