Murdock: some great blues there, my friend!

Zensteve: Am now a fan of Portishead!

Here's a little something to fit my Saturday evening mood.

Claudia Bettinaglio does a really decent cover of Tom Waits' immortal "Jockey Full of Bourbon." The video takes scenes from Jim Jarmusch's "Down by Law."

I'm enclosing the lyrics at the bottom. Enjoy.

Jockey Full of Bourbon

Edna Million in a drop dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain
Sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I've been drinking from a broken cup
Two pairs of pants and a mohair vest
I'm full of bourbon, I can't stand up

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Schiffer broke a bottle on Morgan's head
And I'm stepping on the devil's tail
Across the stripes of a full moon's head
And through the bars of a Cuban jail
Bloody fingers on a purple knife
Flamingo drinking from a cocktail glass
I'm on the lawn with someone else's wife
Admire the view from up on top of the mast

Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

I said hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

Yellow sheets on a Hong Kong bed
Stazybo horn and a Slingerland ride
"To the carnival" is what she said
A hundred dollars makes it dark inside
Edna Million in a drop dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

I like to join in with this thread sometimes. Here's a song from Bayside. They are by far one of my all time favourite bands. Whenever I forget what cd I've got in the car and I turn the ignition and Bayside comes on it makes me smile. Today I am that really depleted feeling kind of hung over, and I have a feeling not much is gonna get done and all in all it will be a disappointing day. But I put some Bayside on and now I don't care 'cause I feel happy. Damn I love these guys.

Anyway, here's a song from their last album 'Shudder'. It's called Rochambo (Rock, Paper, Scissors)

And here's another song called 'Winter'. This is from the acoustic cd they released in 2006. This song is dedicated to their original drummer John 'Beatz' who was killed when their van crashed after a show in Colorado. :(

These guys crack me up. Probably not their best tune, but they certainly tell a story with every song.

I know it's only supposed to be one song, but...

Love me some Acid Bath. Shame about Pitri though - would love to have gotten more music from him. (okay, that's not supposed to sound so selfish, lol)

Deadboy and the Elephant Men didn't appeal to me as much as Acid Bath does.

Apparently Dax Riggs has a couple of other albums out that I haven't heard. One of them is pretty recent. A buddy of mine liked em, but said one was better than the other.

DK. It's Jr. High all over again. :) Caught that a little later than some. :P

Albert Ayler (and free jazz in general) always serves as a wintertime mental flush-and-fill for me. Here's Ayler on sax with Call Cobbs on harpsichord playing "Angels" from the ESP-disk release of "Spirits Rejoice."

Breaking my own "no music video" rule, but this needs to go here.

Sometimes, I need a reminder:

Declare the weight of the world has yet to claim you
And admit that your faults will not restrain you
Glimpses of fate bring light to your despair
Realise hope isn't short of your grasp
Resurrect every dream that you've buried alive
And never succumb to the war that you fight in your heart

Neil Young - Angry World

Neil just won the grammy for Best Rock Song for Angry World:

It's his first grammy for music, having won just one previously for art direction of his archives box set.

Zenga Zenga Song

Here's a music video that just went viral in the Arab world.

It's a cut and remix by an Israeli, from Qaddafi's latest unhinged speech.

I guess when it comes to tyrants, we're all one tribe.

Heard this in one of the various podcasts I had playing in the background today. The end was a bit weak, but it's still interesting.

Never heard of these guys before, nor do I know the backstory to the track.

Having since found the backstory to the track...

Original author Gil Scott-Heron died yesterday. :(

Here's a (somewhat ironic) video to back the original spoken-word music track.
