The Killing TV series

We had a marathon Netflix session over the weekend and watched ALL of the 1st season of THE KILLING. Did not see the original Danish series and no doubt it was good, but man oh man... LOVED IT! Along the lines of TWIN PEAKS without all the Lynchian oddities, making it less "strange" (which is what made TP so great) but a bit more accessible (more crime drama with some serious suspense.)

The production is top notch on all accounts and in particular the cinematography is blowing me away. Just gorgeous.

Anyone watching this? Anyone seen the original?

I'm definitely taking some cues from this series for lighting, framing, coloring, and set design.

Love the show too! It reminds me of a cross between X-Files (without the supernatural element) and Seven. Very moody.

And they had BETTER tell who the killer is this week, or I'm done watching! There's only so much dragging out they can do with this story line...

Yep! Definitely has the brooding tone of X-files and Seven. :)

I think the takeaway for me is the cinematography. The more "stuff" that can be layered between the camera's lens and the actors, the better. Not for every shot, of course, but for me it's a lesson in framing, lighting, camera movement (or not) and detailed set design and how it all sings together.

Dirty focus? Is that what they call it?

They really did a fantastic job with making staring at a computer screen or standing in a hallway or two people talking look visually interesting and artful. That gloomy Seattle weather certainly helps!
