It is my opinion, that at the low-budget level, you will greatly benefit by being nice and friendly. Treat everyone on the set, from the star to volunteer unskilled PA with the same level of respect. Be liberal with "thank you" and praise, but don't be shy to say that something is not exactly the way you envision it. Being nice is not the same as being a push-over.
Our whole group of cast and crew regulars were all friends first, so its all done mostly by friendly committee.
