Need Mannequins for dangerous work!

Anybody ever acquired mannequins for any (legitemate cinematic) reason? I am really interested in finding one with arms and head, maybe more than one. I have at least one stunt that has a passive human form in it, and this would be great for that. I checked ebay, but I wondered if some local clothing store could hook me up for free. If you have ever had any luck with this, please let me know.

In all the years I've been making movies finding mannequins
has elluded me. At least cheap/used ones. You can buy them
new, but they are expensive. I've occationally found one in a
thrift store.

However, for stunt use you might be better off building a stunt
dummy. I have built several - all caller "Bob the dead guy"

First is the skeleton: I use 1X2 and various sizes of wood (and
sometimes steel) dowels. Steel is heavy but more durable - wood
is sturdy, lighter and when it breaks it’s easy to fix.

I build everything except hands and the head. I use leather strips
appx. 1.5in X 3.5in for the joints (wrist, shoulders, elbows, hips,
knees, ankles) that are either screwed or riveted to the “bones”. If
you do this right, the joints will only bend in the correct direction.
In some cases I’ll wrap each bone with gaffers tape.

Then I cover the bones with various densities of foam, from harder
around the chest to softer for the arms and legs. I use Super 77
adhesive to attach it and an electric carving knife to sculpt the foam
to the shape I like. I also lay in my blood tubing at this time - using
Y and T joints I make sure I have exit points at the wrists, ankles and
neck. I even have exit points at the chest and back to I can do “bullet” hits.

You can buy hands at many novelty shops.

For the head I build a shoulder area that can be changed out depending
in what effect I need. I can put a cut neck for a severed head effect.

With some experimentation you can build a working, realistic dummy
for movies and haunted houses.

Sorry to do this on the alternate account... on the road again!

Go talk to your local firehouse... or rather where they train firemen.

Basically, the fire service uses full weight dummies, with the correct centre of gravity. They use them to train firemen (and women) to lift bodies out of burning buildings... they've normally got loads of them lying about and possibly an old one that is no good for training anymore, but ideal for you're intending.

I only know this, because that's how I filmed the hanging sequence, for the end of "No Place"

If you are planning any stunt work with it, you need to factor into your risk assessment, that the dummy is going to weight at least ten stone... and is therefore a serious hazard on set. (I mean, you'll kill someone, if you drop it from a height... and rigging it to suspend needs to be done by someone who understands how to tie lower something over the edge without getting pulled over after it... I'm not joking here, these things are seriously dangerous on set)

I am going to check the firehouse by me on the way home. What a totally out of the box suggestion, Clive!

Directorik - yours is going to be my plan B, because I am handy and can pull that off. My dummy is going to be fully dressed anyway, and will only be in one pose the whole scene.

So I have two good options now.

Thanks!!
