Need Ideas!

Hello, I am doing a film and I am wanting a burning book. What I was thinking was Holding a book up in the air closed, but have flames shooting up out the inside top of the book. What I had thought was carving the inside of the book out. But I dont know what to use as a fuel that would be safe? Any ideas are appreciated!

You are going to need to find someone who has a lot of knowledge in pyrotechnics.

A pyrotechnician should be able to tell you the proper materials that you will need to do this and set up for you for a fee.

Sorry I wasn't more help.

I live in a very small town in the middle of nowhere, thats sounds like a good idea but I don't where i could find a good pyrotechnician. but thank you very much for replying.

I had thought of that but I figured that maybe some of the people on the forums might have some unique ideas so, Thanks!

I am good at CG so I might do this, I will have to learn how to do some lighting, but that won't be an issue! Thanks, And if any one else has ideas I'm always open to Ingenius ideas.

There is no fuel that would be safe. All fuel that will create a fire
is dangerous.

You know who does have knowledge and understanding of fuel
and fire local to you? The fire department. While they may not
be well versed in movie pyrotechnics they will know what you
can do to get this effect safely. In a very small town in the middle
of nowhere where no one is making movies you will find that
the local firefighters are excited to help.

How about you just burn a book?

Am I missing something here? Books are made of paper. Paper burns. The fuel is oxygen. Light a match.

Well Thank you all for all your ideas, I was thinking of just burning it, but wanted to see if you had any ideas, so thank you all for your comments!

***IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK AND PERIL!***

First, use a fake book.

Install a remote control model rocket igniter. Run the electric match into a hole that you drill into the top edge of the "pages". You can then use epoxy to make a trench on the top edge of the pages. The electric match (the disposable part of the igniter) must protrude into the trench. After the epoxy is fully cured, you can dribble a small amount of lacquer thinner or isopropyl alcohol into the trench. When you press the button of the remote igniter, the book will seem to burst into flames. Keep in mind that alcohol has a blue/green hue and is not very bright. Light your scene accordingly. Always test in a safe place with a fire extinguisher on standby.

Don't try this at home

Then that's what you should do.

CG would be the safest way to go. It's not what's better, it's what's safer.

Well I have decided what I am going to do. I found a small metal spice can about 1" wide and 2" long. I cut a stot out just big enough for it to fit. And I put some White Gas in it and it worked perfect for our test shot. Now I am wondering how to get a good video at night. I have found that the camera can not go bright enough to see what is going on. All that can be seen is my face and a flame. Here is the video.

Light your scene.

If you are not near an outlet where you can plug in your light, then get 200-500 feet of extension cords (depending on if you will be doing audio recording on set), then get a generator, place it far away, then run the extension cord from the generator to the light.

Do you have lighting equipment? Check out this thread:

I have some videos and links about the importance of lighting and how to make DIY lights, as well as cheap and expensive gear.

If you are near an outlet, I'd buy something like this:

And/or this:

Word of warning, these get hot. Be careful.

You could get some cheap clamp lights, then build some DIY light stands.

Go here:

If you are really desperate, you could do a day for night, then add fire later.

If neither of those are available to you (which they should), then faster lenses is the only thing that could solve the problem.

Hope this helped!

Here is the video.
No video.

Hopefully it's at youtube, where the simplest thing to do is C&P the link.
But if you wanna get fancy just put the URL gibberish after the equals sign between https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=and.

Like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbEoRnaOIbs (you'll see it if you hit the quote button.)

Thank you for the links chimpman I will defidently check these out! and as for no video I couldn't figure it out, so I put a link.
