My distribution plan for a $50k USD profit.

So I decided to put my money where my mouth is, shoot something I can distribute and attempt to make money while keeping my day job. My business plan is modest and I believe a profit of around $50k USD is more than feasible, although I would split this with my co-conspirators, equally. As this is my first project shooting for the money, I may well fall flat on my face but thought I would put it on here.

In particular, I believe that 99% of what I have read about distribution on IT does not touch the possibilities of the 'new' distribution model and there is a different method of approaching this. There are experienced film makers on here who have clearly indicated I am wrong but rather than argue on an internet discussion board, I am simply going to put up money and try my 'new' model. A synopsis of my plan is:

- The most important element is the marketing plan and the start of the project and everything stems from this. This has been written conservatively and covers everything you would expect.

- Naturally, I have test-run the idea on friends and film makers. When told about it, they believe there is an untapped target audience which is desperate for this type of content. Am naturally being a little coy around title etc... but having run this by a couple of people, there is immediate interest.

- Part of the marketing plan is to meet key individuals with large audiences who will promote my little project free of charge. For example, I have a meeting with the presenter of a net channel with 18 million annual views who describes my project as 'fun' and will promote it on his channel. I believe he may be happy to promote me free of charge, meaning host my trailer, write about it, interview me. If this is the case, this is the second largest 'fish' I want to hook from a promotional perspective.

- Approaches have been made to other organisations which have not, yet returned my calls / emails but from the initial reaction of the channel host, I believe I am in with a shot of getting free promotion.

- Printed media: I have identified around 150 different 'minor' publications and forums which will want to discuss my little project. These are all focused on my target market. This means potential purchasers will be absolutely bombarded with my project. Everywhere they look, they will see adverts, interviews, posters etc...

- Initial costs have been budgeted for and money set aside for the entirety of the shoot.

- Equipment will be DSLR level and sound will be enough for my target audience and distribution. Ideally, I would have an Arri Alexa, mobile lighting truck and half a million bucks of sound equipment but I don't and will use the techniques I have painstakingly gleaned to drive this forward.

- Crew is on board. Can't afford to pay them but we will have an equal split as I genuinely want partners. Too often, I see musicians say 'looking for film making partners...' but if they make any money, they won't share it with the film maker. I'm different and want everyone to make money. H@ll, if this works, I will be sitting on a goldmine!

- Mainstream media will only be approached if this project is good enough.

Who knows if my crazy plan will work and no idea if anyone will be interested. Clearly, I believe it is in with a fighting chance and if someone generating 18 million views per year believes it is a good idea, then that is a hint I may be going in the right direction.

Next update after my meetings with the key players and the first part of the marketing plan has been executed. Stage 2 is to hone the project based on some of their input (to better appeal to the target market) and go into pre.

I like what you've come up with so far. I wish you the best success!

I appreciate what you've explained so far.

I'd love to know what the genre is, what crew you're using. Most specifically your production and promotion team, but others would also like to know who your production and post production team is (not specifically who each is, but the roles that are covered and if there are any double ups)

I'm sure there'll be more questions if you're open to answer them.

Keep us in the loop.

It is being completed in stages and at the moment, I am the entirety of the promotion team.

What is encouraging is having someone with 18 million annual views on their channel want to meet with me and publicise what I am doing. As a note, they regularly receive 1.5 million per month and they believe they have around 300,000 unique views. Already, this is an interesting marketing start.

Definitely a coup. Well done!

Bearing in mind he might end up asking me for money. Maybe he will be asking for masses of money to advertise on his site which wouldn't be great. However, he is treating this idea seriously so it's a start.

Good luck. Let us know how things go.

This is not an area I have any experience in so can't advise unfortunately.

Thanks. I have no experience either... I'm just making it up as I go along. I did my research, have seen an area of distribution which I believe could make money (and I could be wrong) and am making my play. It's all new.

There's only so far you can get from talking about stuff… sometimes, you just have to do it… I was told it was a fool's errand to make films at all and that it was an unachievable goal. Over a dozen productions and a few paid gigs later... :)

Keep us up to date on how it's going and remember that once the ball gets rolling, you get to keep running no matter what so you don't get smooshed by it!

I hear you and remember those conversations. I was told it was ridiculous, what am I doing etc...? And now one of of the biggest sceptics is a fan! Next week, a CEO of one of the world's most successful genre film festivals will be watching my short to decide if he wants to include it next year. If he does, it would be a major coup but just to get this far put a big smile on my face.

However, this is not yet 'success.' Success can be measured by the desire of other people to give me money for what I do. This is the next stage and I think (but could be wrong) that the new distribution model I am seeing will work for me. Others on IT think this is nonsense but I think the risk is low enough that I am trying it with my own funds as I believe in doing, not talking.

And in terms of genre and market - that's the key. I don't want to talk about it on an open site but the idea from a marketing perspective is to have a ready-made audience crying out for content which currently does not exist. Apologies for being coy again but think of it along these lines... imagine an audience which loves zombie movies but no zombie movies have been shot for 25 years.

Sure, there are zombie appreciation societies (screaming out for content), zombie short films, zombie clubs and even zombie forums... but no actual, zombie films.

OK, I'm not shooting zombies but you get the idea about genre and this being really obvious. When I've run the genre by a couple of people, their first reaction generally was 'Oh My God, that's so dangerous.' Followed by, '...but there is so obviously a target audience with money and who would buy this...'

So that's what I'm going for although I could fail, dramatically.

I know this is getting slightly off-topic, there's been plenty I'm sure. We tend to never hear about them though, as sadly they usually end up on par with this - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2006801/

Possibly one of the worst films I've ever seen, as this reviewer would attest to - "This is the worst pile of funky monkey shit I have ever seen. I bought it at best buy for 20 bucks, excited to see it and i just sat there thinking of ways I could punch the director right in his fucking face". :D

Nuff said.

I'm intruiged by your idea though, and impressed with the pre-prod marketing efforts too. I hope it goes well for you. :)

Huge disappointment...

The largest association in the UK has turned down my request for support. Naturally, we only wanted their time and perhaps some level of non-financial assistance in this project but they sent back a poorly-written email indicating they have no interest... at this stage. Naturally, if what we are doing is good, they will want 'in' but at the moment, they don't give a monkeys.

Their involvement would've saved a massive amount of time but hey ho...

Is this the same person/company? What's your back-up plan? If you believe these individuals' opinion, there may be others out there for you to approach...

I doubt it's the same, at least I hope not, I'd be expecting the largest association in the UK to get a few more than 18million annual views..
