Hey Robert,
Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the film and offer these ideas. They're pretty good, but what can I say? They don't really reflect the simple concept of the movie: one guy vs. nine messages. That's all I was really aiming for.
With all due respect, I'm not asking anyone to get on board with Mixed Messages any more than others are asking me to watch their five minutes (I can't even get through 60 seconds) of muzzle flashes and high school friends running around with plastic guns and fake explosions.
This whole short came about via Wheatgrinder's "1 minute Short Sad Scene" contest and the idea kinda snowballed into more messages. I stuck with 9 because the answering machine went to nine. It was an exercise for me to stay busy with writing and to collaborate with some IndieTalk folks and see if we could make something from nothing. I think we did pretty good.
Sure, maybe some of the messages could be shortened (or written shorter) to speed things along some, but as for cutting to other shots of EMTs, the band, the wife... it just didn't feel like the right choice for this piece. The conceit was to stay with the guy and stay on the machine and voices. For what it's worth, it played really well at its first screening in Providence, Rhode Island. The crowd was engaged and had lots of positive comments afterward. They actually liked the simplicity of the set up.
I'm not in any way saying your take on it is wrong, I'll just say that it's probably not what this short film is about. Maybe I'll make another one!?
Thanks again for the feedback. Always great to get varying opinions on the work we produce.
Cheers.
* I will add that I think it's great that your imagination wandered while watching and it got you thinking about all of these people and different scenarios happening, like the band and stuff. Cool.
