I thought Robert Altman did a great job with Sam Shepherd's "Fool for Love," with Shepherd, Kim Basinger, Harry Dean Stanton and Randy Quaid. It's one of my favorite plays anyway, and Altman moved it to the screen with great care. Welles's "Chimes at Midnight" and "Othello" are both great examples of adapting Shakespeare to film and of making films independently, guerrilla-style.
