Help us Save Small Gauge Film

We're Gamma Ray Digital, a digital film finishing service located in Boston, MA. We specialize in digital film restoration, Blu-ray and DVD authoring, and compression services for specialized playback systems (museum exhibits, trade shows, etc).

We have recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund the purchase of a high end film scanner specifically designed to deal with small gauge films: 8mm through Super16. These formats are often neglected, kept in improper storage conditions, projected even though they've shrunk, and so on. Many of these films are originals, shot in camera on reversal (positive) stock, so there are no other copies. It's critical that as many as possible be scanned before they deteriorate. The problem is that scanning is incredibly expensive, usually out of the reach of artists, indie filmmakers, students and small archives.

To that end, we've set out to crowdfund the purchase of a film scanner. By reducing the purchase price, we can in turn reduce the rates we charge our clients. The goal is to charge rates lower than one would typically pay for telecine, for 2k scanning of small gauge film. The scanner we're purchasing is sprocketless (gentle), uses optical pin registration instead of a physical pin (also gentle), and can work with film that's shrunken well beyond what one could put in a projector or telecine. It will handle mag or optical audio as well.

Please check out our Indiegogo campaign - we've added perks that would be of interest to anyone with 8mm, Super8 or 16mm film, including scanning and disc authoring services.

Thanks!
