Hello everybody,

PDP is an indapendant label based in Exmouth/Devon/England run by me, Kristian Butler. I started the Label a few years back producting local music and premoting local live gigs. Now i am at Film School in Falmouth/Cornwall/England and have started producing my first Short Films.


In The Garden - is my first short. 1917, and the German blockade of the country was making it hard for supplies to get into Britain. The Government introduce rationing, and local authorities authorise the use of parks and other land for allotments. Based on a post war image, with the fall out of being self reliant and living from the land, using allotments to grow crops for the family to live off, In the Garden opens with a montage of shots filmed on location at director Christian Butler’s childhood home. A document of how although this way of life isn’t around to support the family it does however still exists today. Peter Butler stars in his first short film along side his wife Janet and, with a realist interview style that comes across in an entertaining unscripted two shot, as the Devonshire husband and wife talk try to discuss their plans for the garden.

Ollie Cooks Curry - is my second short, filmed in student halls as a timed project. The whole film was scripted, filmed and edited within 5 hours. I see the film as an experemental art house style project, but im sure you can make your own mind about the film.

My last short film in the series is being filmed through out May. I will be DoP of a 5min Short called 'Once i caught a fish alive'. The film is about a insomniac who becomes incresingly paranoied about his friend spying on him. We are filming on location in London and in the Studio in Falmouth. As soon as the production is finished i shall post it up here for you all to see and comment on.

The first one was a nice visual poem, but I'm really a say it and move on kinda guy with shots...so I wanted it to get to the meat of the short faster...personal taste though. Don't have lots of time, the 2nd video is on my laptop waiting for me to watch it. Shots were well composed and gave the feel you were looking for. The shot of the modern radio sucked me out of the reminiscent frame of mind though.

Ahhh the radio! i did'nt think of that... i suppose i could argue that the film is showing the link between the past and the present :yes:

Now I'm confused a bit, was the scene supposed to be taking place in 1917 as it says in the first post?
When I heard "Elmer's Tune" that came out in 1939 I was thinking; "well maybe it's supposed to be WWII and not WWI" and then I saw the radio and thought it was a contemporary take on something that was done years ago.

I did like that sunset scene at the end, the light behind the clouds had a good feel to it. Was that actually the sunset or did you enhance it?

The colors looked good too throughout the piece.

I'm not really sure where you were going story-wise so I will reserve comment, but the Glenn Miller music kept my attention

yeah its a document of how although that way of life, through both world wars, isn’t around just to support the family it does however still exist today, and is making a come back in the UK in citys.

Hope that stops confusion

The confusion comes not from the piece itself, but from your description of it in the first post where you specifically mention the year...so it's not a problem within the vid per se.

I agree with Knightly about In the Garden, it was too slow for my taste...and I don't mind slow shots that are done right, but I think that was too slow for me.

On the other hand, I liked Diablo Fromage. The music bothered me, but that's not a critique, just a personal thing. I thought the flow was outstanding and some of the shots were pretty clever. I thought the bear was unnecessary, but moreso the cut away text shots. I realize that's silent film stuff, but I think the short would've been better without them, especially the first one where you don't have time to read it all anyways.

All in all though, I liked it.

Couple of other things I noticed watching it a second time: I think you missed an opportunity when you introduced the girls. I think it would've worked better to have one girl appear, show some interaction between her and the actor and unspoken dialogue, etc. then have her disappear on him right at the worst time. Just my opinion though.

Also, the mood, tone, etc. are pretty consistent throughout the film. Even in a short film it's usually a good idea to take us through some depths and back up again. When you turn on the radio and listen to a song (well the music I listen to anyways), they do a pretty good job of it in 3 or 4 minutes. Just an example I can think of...a music video that was only 4 minutes long or whatever, Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins, is an excellent example of what I'm talking about. I think a different music choice would've given you a better chance to do something like that. Even with the music you chose, there was still some kind of climax about 10 or 15 seconds from the end, and the actor was kinda just walking around like he was wasted...it didn't really match for me.

Still, I did like the short. Some of the sequences especially early on were really good.
