Drugs in videos

Youtube channel " VICE" and TV show intervention show people consuming, selling and manufacturing drugs. I am curious to know how they take on this liability. What do they do to protect themselves and their final product from legal troubles? I see how the persons being document are protected (changing names, voice masking) but how does the company protect itself in this situation? Are they at any risk for documenting the person(s) consuming, selling and/or manufacturing drugs? Has anyone ever been involved in a project documenting real drug use, exchange or creation?

As long as the people producing the project and recording the events do not encourage or participate in those events it falls under the purview of investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking statutes.
