Aspect Ratios- two different types of 1.33:1?

So Gus Van Sant's 2003 film, Elephant (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363589/), is listed as being in the aspect ration of 1.33:1 - as is Pablo Larraín 2012 film, No (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2059255/). The *odd* aspect ratio of the films comes up in discussions and analysis of the film, so it's not an IMDB error.

However, having seen both films, they are definitely not both the same aspect ratio... I didn't notice "Elephant" having a 1.33:1 ratio when watching it, my attention was only drawn to it when i recently read a discussion that alluded to this... So how can the two films be the same aspect ratio but... not be the same aspect ratio? If that makes sense... Was Van Sant's film later converted to a wider ratio perhaps? I can't find any information on it if that is the case...
