Never used the NTG2 but I have a pair of NT2-A's in my studio and they are great mic's. I am sure that the NTG would be no different. Not to mention that it is available for a very good price. Aprox 270$ give or take.

No special player needed. It's all dependant on how the DVD was authored. Not all have alternate audio tracks or seperate video angles, but if they are available on the DVD, any basic player should be able to utilize them.
