Deathworld: Application and Move in process (read this)

so.. the important thing..

whens the kickoff party in SF? Ill drive down! :P

Excellent Question Wheat,

Probably as soon as we nail down the house, we'll announce it.

Maybe sometime in late October, early November. All indietalkers welcome when we do announce it.

Then a "break in the new house" party, late November, followed by the Christmas party in December, followed by bi monthly mixers going through the project. Though these latter are more like an open house for investors and friends of the project.

To answer the basic question of "when will there be a deathworld party I can go to?"

Answer: all the time + 3 big ones, at the beggining, end, and I'm going to try and get Harry to visit once in the middle to meet everyone and vice versa.

I'm seeing a Dunder Mifflin Infinity Web Live-Stream Party. Do it!

Found a strong candidate for the house. Price, rooms, geography all within range. 7 acres of land means dogs allowed! Check it out.

That can't be real.... drool

she-ooot.. Im strapping grandma 'n her rocker on top the pile o furniture in the back of the pick up and heading down! ;)

For the reality show end, Id just find a local director\crew and let em have at it. I certainly don't want CF "editing" the bathroom shots.. lol.

Whilst I was working in Canada all the actors and crew were living in one house (in which we were also shooting large swathes of the movie). I was in charge of BTS and I set up a camera in the laundry room and we did a little 'Laundry Room Confessional' which was like the diary room in Big Brother. The results were hilarious. I think it would be great to do something like that with this project even if it's only a promo series for YouTube or Vimeo. People love watching the production process in a serialized format.

I would be vary about that property though. It looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G but my Dad has a similar property (albeit on the East Coast) and he can rent it for 40k a month so the price looks suspiciously low to my eyes. Also they're advertising a property like that on Craigslist???

But yer, sounds like fun, fun, fun! ;)

It does make my apt seem ... small ... by comparison.

Nate .. gonna drop you another couple of emails over the weekend. What would you say if I told you we could probably have a working prototype power holster prop during phase one, likely just cost of materials?

Or do you already have that covered? ;)

Edit:

Obviously not operating at the speed that one does, but that's what framerates and camera angles are for. The articulation is totally doable though, and at a snappy enough pace as well.

Double edit:

Hmm. It seems the text description (on re-reading) is less of a contraption than I had pictured, making it more difficult. More thought needed. :)

There's a chance I'll be up in the Bay Area & Sacramento shooting a short early December. If that happens (and I have the time) I'd love to swing by the IndieTalk Crew Chalet and meet 'n' greet some folks. At any rate, best of luck with pre, pro, and post! Very exciting.

David.rhs, I'm ready to jump into.. but Id like to see some concept art before putting electronic pen to phosphorus screen.

Which brings to mind LOOK AND FEEL... The PDF gave a wide range of possible looks... a power holster could be top of the line military high tech, or 300 year old antique from the first colonization, or anywhere in between. Im guessing worn, battered and repaired would fit the "world in decline" feel.. but what do I know.. ???

In my view it wouldn't be needed in phase one, and might not be needed at all. I'd seriously consider cutting it out of the script as it doesn't add much. The Pyrrans could easily be explained to have lightning fast reflexes through their training/lifestyle. Adding a contraption like the power holster is going to look clunky on the big screen, and create headaches during production. Streamlining minor details that don't really add anything can often lead to a better film.

Sounds amazing, and really, really well planned out. Sure you guys will have an awesome time, can't wait to see some updates :)

I like the power holster. In my opinion it's not enough though, I wish Harry had written in a couple more signiture objects. I think it's a fun scene when they do the whole "bond and Q" scene with the holster. Also I think it's important to keeping the original vision of our author.

@David and Wheat, I'm absolutely good with you guys pitching some prototypes. I'd love to see what you come up with. My overall thought is something akin to a 44 automag on a slider on a metal forearm brace. Units should look worn. We'll have to use a real gun and mod it up in the metal shop a bit. My main concern is that spring loading the thing might eventually cost someone a finger. Using a gun on a slider with blanks is another issue. (can't fake recoil in post) So what we'll do I think is to have it slide out and lock when an actor throws their arm out. Once locked into place, the gun can be fired normally. The gun can be pushed forward to unlock and then slide back in via gravity or TBD method. A big part of making this work is time ramping in post. Basically by using 300 style ramping slomo throughout the combat scenes, we can cover the fact that That we are also using it to augment the function of the power holster. We'll ramp up the framerate for just an instant as the gun comes out of the sleeve.

@sineater I agree that we will have to streamline in some areas, but not too many. Keeping details is important, but stuff like the gravity effects almost every scene in the film, so that's why we can't make that a universal constant. Some combat will be similar to what was seen in Equilibrium, so yeah, we are definitely going with the lightning reflexes. As far as the holster looking clunky on screen, we'll have the pistol slide back into the suit sleeve, and then when the camera cuts, replace it with something less bulky.

I'm all for keeping the author's vision, I just think it will be hard to explain exactly what it is and how it functions on the screen. The novel explains it senses the movement in your tendons (I think?) but I worry it will seem like it comes out when you think of it. That could be confused by the audience as psi powers, which the city dwellers don't have. Maybe I'm overthinking things.

On film, I'm thinking that if the gun flies out right as their hand reaches full extension the audience will buy the whole "tendon sensor" illusion. There is the scene where Reese is telling him about it, so I think that will be clear enough.

It's ok to think and ask questions. Before we go to stage 2, we should be able to answer any question thrown at us, so it's good to talk about this stuff.

hum...for every instance where the gun is used, we don't need to see the entire power holster actuation. We do a very nice detail build for the close up during the introduction and first use, after that, in subsequent scenes the actual USE of the power holster is just a blur so we only really need a "gun in firing position" version.

For the full film, I can see a couple 300fps shots during high action where we see it snap out in slow mo... cool..

You read my mind! We'll use the detailed one when you can see it clearly, then just have the gun appear in their hand for others.

One scene where we don't want them to see the power holster is the first scene where Kerk and Jason meet. In that scene the gun should just appear in Kerk's hand in a flash of motion.

Out of curiosity, is there already a script written?

Yes, but we have not finalized negotiations on the existing one. Whether we write from that script or write a script directly from the book, there will be some modifications coming, and the final script will be available to crew only about midway through the phase 1 process.
