I had two ideas on the way home, I almost want to make my own 15 second spot! But ill still participate in yours!

One idea is a MACRO close up of a nut in one of my rather techy-retro vices I have ( both literal and figurative, hehe ) instead of yelling, Im whispering.. as I CRANK the screw until the nut cracks.. filmed right this could be intense.. no Pistachios right now or I would have done it already!

Be sure to submit your video as soon as you can, there's been cases where people have missed out due to traffic on the site in the last couple hours of submission.

I'm working on the same assignment as is Wheat, I have two pieces of material, one which a few of the IT crowd are helping me with, Wheat included, who is also working on his own submission.

As for our next short, you'll be seeing it mid November, followed by a flurry of shorts come to think of it. We're busy, but it's great.

It's always smart to put in a "Draft", you'll see this alot as Poptent have openely admitted that problems do occur come the final moments of submission. With your draft, they'll allow you-if your "Final cut" failed to upload- to submit it after deadline. Interestingly enough this won't apply if you do not have any material submitted prior to deadline. Yet, this is all depending on when the brand are going to be sent the spots.

Strangely, people tend to accept the assignment, never to submit their work. The lure of the cash-prize perhaps, but 100-200 submissions tend to be the regular.

How've you found working to such minimal time restraints?

Im still finding my way though "where film fits in my life". It seems that I have a "feel" for the short form, and an exteranly imposed deadline gets me off my back side and makes me move!

In short (pun loosely intended), I guess I like it.

@ROC - Im excited for you to see my submission. I took the day off of work yesterday (vacation day) and recorded all my own sounds.. eating apples, scraping tools, making funny noises in the mic. It was great fun. I need to pull the music down in the mix, some of that gets lost, but you stil feel its there. Also, I still need a cloth pass, I ran out of time last night (literally nodding off at the computer) but like PTP says, for that site, its best to get a DRAFT submission in early, so they got what I had ready this morning.

EDIT: It would seem that it can be faster to make your own Foley\SFX rather than scour the internet looking for just the right sample.. whoda thunk it...

But I'm being sincere -- I'd do it simply for the fun of it, and wouldn't feel the slightest bit bad if you chose to use your own edit. You could try. It would be a nice juxtaposition given the circumstance. Although, again, it's tough with the time you have, if a Pop melody could deliver as an Orchestral track would.

EDIT: We happened to change our track, after a huge mishap on our last Poptent venture. I'm sure they'd oblige, be it you've got material already submitted. As of when-if you do decide to change the track- the spot you have in place will stand as your current up until you submit the other when it will be replaced.

I think the music is perfect myself. It’s slight fade-in/ semi understated nature gives it a subtle yet vital
“Already in progress” or “The continuing adventures of..” or pre-established (even genre pre established) feel which in that time span to me nails it.

I tried for an hour to get the NUT to crack in the vice for real.. it just sorta opens nicely.. I could try ONE MORE TIME.. or get a better set of closed \ open shots.

I would never have thought to do it that way, but last week I watched a bunch of youtube links either ROC or Alcove posted about sound.. and there was this AWESOME Foley artists and in the middle of his HUGE studio etc. . hes making WIND noises, like my mom telling a scary story. and its the wind used in a movie I recognized.. so why not squelch..

It's a valid technique, my legitimate sound capabilities are benign, however.

Ok wheat, I messed around with it a bit. I think I could do much better if I had your audio track, cuz that needs to match, as well. Anyway, it's not surprising that yours and my treatment of it are pretty darn similar -- I mean we're not exactly trying to re-invent the wheel here. But here's what I had in mind --

It's not just that your crescendo got lost in the mix, it was way too brief. When I mentioned a crescendo, I meant, like for the whole beginning, and make it big. And when I mentioned a resolution, I mean, like a proper ending, whereas yours just fades back in with the same music loop as before. It needs a big ending, in my opinion.

If you like this, I'd be happy to re-cut it, when you're able to get me the audio track. Or, if you wanna just leave it at this, as me using this cut to show an example of what I recommend, that's cool, too. I just thought it'd be fun to toss my hat in the mix.

Papertwin, same offer goes to you. Whether you want big orchestral stuff like this, or pop music, I'd be happy to mess around with it, and for such a short clip, this takes no time at all.

Gladly. But there's the question of the ticking clock (the biggest issue to match up), as well as the VO and sound effects -- all of which have a rythm and need to match the music. I'll check your member contact info for your email, but if it's not there, PM me with it.

We've got our Foley artist working on Sound, with alot to work with from our recordist. A score just seems out of context for the material.

It won't be long before i post our next work, a music video for the icelandic band "Múm". Of course not legitimately, one of us loves the track, we thought we'd put something together while we location scout for the next short.

Moving cities is tough, location wise anyhow.

I’d like to see it (Cracker edit) mixed with the video and rest of the sounds proper. (Do you mean it would be over Wheat’s music?)

Right now (to me) it’s like the stabs are punctuating and driving towards a dead end, or pushing it towards an implied meaning or resolution that isn’t there, like:
Whirrrrrl- It-! Helps-! It-! To-! Not-! Add-! Up-!, where as Wheat’s creates more of the typical or parodied atmosphere of that diffusing set-up, more of selling the same old same of the set-up than a resolution to it.

If you added an explosion and the pistachio package shaking at the end, then you would have some resolution to the stabs, especially if it’s like a musical rest then the final stab, like:
dunt! dunt! dunt! dunt! dunt!….Wonderful pistachios, get crackin’ DUNT! (with the explosion),
but right now (to me) it comes across as trying to turn loud into story, but without the whole thing as one, and to the actual video it's hard to say what it might be like in whole.

The stabs are nice sounding though.

In particular you inspired me to think about the tick as an instrument, rather than a sound design element. So in this draft, if you listen to the tic you here its more PLAYING along with the music...

I think Buddy is getting my point, the resolution is NOT the defusing the bomb, its getting the nut.. the hero saves the day anyway.....

I really like the white look and lighting. It's very fresh and advertising slick.
Kind of let's the product own that shade of color instead of the lighting itself being of the yellowish tint.

The white was tough. In the shots where you see it.. every frame is rotoscoped! A greenscreen might have been easier, but I just don't have the confidence with keying and a deadline of three days is not the time to get that confidence.

I did shot on a white background, really just a piece of foam core gaffed to a rolling light stand this worked quite well, but I was not able to successfully PUSH the whites like I needed without totally bonking the rest of the image. As the background was already "whitish" the masks didn't need to be all that tight, so it wasn't ALL TOO BAD to roto the shots, a few hours...

The white background was a part of the job description, though it did say "if possible..." If Id had a great location I may have risked something different, as it is, my basement is pretty dull.

However, our Foley guy is unavailable, we managed to cut the two shots because there was a gap in the audio. I'm not favourable of the shot in question, either. It takes me out of it.

with youtube and some of the advanced ad placement techniques (head end cable systems late night programing etc.. ) its a good spot for the desired demographic in the right time slot.

We hadn't pre-empt a demographic, only assuming from what i research i had from their past commercials. I was somewhat testing their boundaries.

Yes but I believe that if they want to use them they still have to buy the spot for whatever the agreed upon 'prize' price was.

If you go through older entries on the blog you will actually see examples of companies coming back after a month or two and buying more submissions because they liked them so much (and it's probably still a crazy good deal for them).
