Syfy picks up scifi short.

The short was a writing assignment by Rachel Rogers, who spent $1,000 on her school project. I hope they make it into a movie, for her sake.

Hmm, Rik, you thinking what I'm thinking?

Wow, great break for him. And a school (!!!) project - that's a lot of talent for someone so young.

Thanks for sharing.

For those interested, I shot this with a Canon c100. Lenses used were the Canon 24mm IS prime, the Canon 50mm 1.4, the 100mm Macro IS 2.8 and the Tokina 11-16mm. By far, most of it was shot on the 24 and the 100. The final shot was done with my trusty 5DII as it was a pickup. There was no crew on this shoot. Just myself and Bianca. The shoot took 3 days and post production took significantly longer. All the visuals were done in after effects. I used Element3D a good amount. Thank you to everyone who helped me out during all the time spent editing. You know who you are.

I wanted to create something that showcased what I could really do all on my own. So I wrote a script that took advantage of multiple environments and could function on a skeleton crew (me alone). The story is something I have a feature film treatment written for and would love to get made. The idea of someone that can travel the universe but is stuck doing it on her own is something I wanted to play with. There's a lot more to the story that I hope gets told soon! I spent a total of four days shooting, but the process of editing, color and vfx took about 6 months. During that time it was almost an experiment to get the perfect look. I redid shots multiple times and painted many backdrops that didn't get used, but the result is something I'm happy that people can appreciate. I was hoping to provide a sense of mystery and I think I did that.

There are going to be more and more SF shorts. That said, I wonder if any other genre will experience the same thing - say, the Comedy Channel picking up some Youtube improvs.

Talented student, no doubt about it. Cool that his short school project landed him a deal.

Does it seem like this sort of situation typically happens mostly in the SCI FI genre? People in spaceships, fancy FX, slick futuristic graphics, outer space worlds, robots...

While I have written some material that leans into the sci-fi genre, I just don't have the inclination or the skill set to tackle the scope of this kind of project. Which then can get me wondering if that which I am inclined to produce has "what it takes" to find a similar success somewhere. Probably not alone on this?

I do hope it's the beginning of a long career for him!

It's how Neill Blomkamp (District 9) broke in. The very young director (Gareth Edwards) of Monsters was also a CGI whizz.

This Sci-Fi short (2 years in the making by 10-person VFX studio Big Lazy Robot) has also been picked up and a feature version is in the works too...

If you like sci-fi, watch it - it's very very good:

There's still a chance for us non-CGI wonders though. E.g. Destin Cretton has written a few shorts. His short Short Term 12 did very well at Sundance. He then got a chance to direct the feature which has gotten very good reviews. He's now in talks with the big leagues - Jennifer Lawrence is very interested in starring in his latest project. He's a director and gifted screenwriter, won a Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting etc.

Short Term 12 - short

And the director (Andrew Renzi) of the Sundance-selected short The Fort is presently directing a feature starring Dakota Fanning and Richard Gere.

That's just a few examples. So yeah, there is still a chance for non-CGI folks too.

I watched "The Fort". Gotta say, I really like Jake Weber (the man) and the kid was great, but Oscar Nominated? Hmmmph... :weird:
** wait, I think I'm getting the films mixed up... this one was a Sundance selection. my mistake. Still, not sure it had a very satisfying ending. for me. **
I think I read it was Oscar qualifying.

another Sci-Fi "LUNAR" with all the necessary bells, whistles & tropes to potentially turn some industry heads?

very Blomkamp-esque
