Releasing Trailer before Distribution deal?

I have recently finished my first feature film and was wondering if I released my trailer to the film before I secured a distribution deal, would that ruin my chances of ever getting one? Or do they not care if your trailer is out there for everyone to see.... ? Was really curious and feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
 
If it's a crap trailer, it might hurt you.

If it's a great trailer that generates lots of interest, it can really put you in a position of power than negotiating with a distributor.
