Questions about Dolly shots?

Most- well, all- of the dolly shots I've done so far have been horizontal (left to right) so I didn't have to change the focus while shooting. Now, I want to do close-in dolly shots that zoom into a subject, but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to keep the camera focused on the same object as it moves in/out.

Are there any good articles out there I could read about this? Thanks!

Two ways to do this:

1. Shoot with a depth of field wide enough that your subject is in focus, both at the beginning of the shot, as well as the end.

2. Follow-focus (you adjust the focus during the shot). This can be tough to do, and takes practice. In Hollywood, you would have a guy dedicated solely for the job of "pulling focus".

You'll probably have to do a combination of both (wide depth of field, and pull focus).
