Need recommendation for video editing software

Good people, I'm a screenwriter who is just getting started with learning video. I've taken a bunch of video with my camera. My camera is very basic. At this point, I'm just looking to learn. But my ultimate goal is to make a short movie. For right now I need some basic video editing software. So my question to everyone is, could I get some opinions on what is a good FREE video editing software that I could use to learn and try some things out? I want to take these videos I shot add music, narrative, captions, intros, outros, insert video clips into other videos I shot, etc.

I've been playing around with Microsoft Movie Maker and it doesn't seem to do what I need. Also, if the recommended free video editing software comes with a video tutorial, all the better!! Thanks a million in advance for any insight on this.

PS. I'm even willing to pay for something if it's simple, intuitive and does what I need it to (the basics). I don't need anything professional at this point.

Sony's Movie Studio is relatively low priced and is a good stepping stone to something like After Effects, Vegas Pro, or Final Cut.

My advise overall is to invest in the best you can, so you don't have to replace it later. If you must avoid the professional software... get the 80$.... I'm not sure what the benefit of the 130$ one is aside from DVD creation.

I recommend Sony Movie Studio. I know you said you want free, but it's pretty cheap and works well. It's a very strait forward and basic editor with minimal fx such as color balance, chroma key, etc. It also has a text layer you can use any fonts with.

I did not have any luck with blender or other free editing software, but have been very happy with Sony Movie Studio.

~$70 http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Movie-St...=1387577218&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+movie+studio

When I got my copy I was confused by the different versions and cost, but the one I got (less expensive version) worked just fine. I have # 12
