ME66 to Canon XL1s

I have just purchased a Sennheiser ME66 for use with my Canon XL1s. Rather than purchase the MA-100 or MA-200 XLR mic adapter I purchased 2x XLR to phono adapters to save money. However the recording level is extremely low using the ME66 compared with the sandard XL1s microphone. Does anyone know if the canon MA adapters have some sort of power boost or is there a way to get good results with the ME66 without spending $200 - $300 for a Canon adapter?

I think you'll need pre-amps... which the XL1 doesn't provide for external mic's unless you have a special breakout box. You can get a breakout box with two XLR inputs (Left and Right). I'm not sure on the price of these now but I'm sure you'll be looking about $200 - canon like to monopolise their monopoly when it comes to costing!
The other way to do it is to buy a seperate pre-amp box. You can buy battery operated pre-amp boxes with an XLR input and XLR output... and then you could take a feed out to the RCA input...
