At college at the moment...

...and I've loved films all my life at at a loose end a few years a go I realised this is what I wanted to do with my life - but my knowledge is still pretty basic. I struggle to get involved in discussions with my other classmates about anything in the film industry so I was wondering:

What are the best books, articles, videos, films etc to learn about (basically all the sub categories in the "Making the Film" category):

  • Screenwriting
  • Business & Legal
  • Pre-Production
  • Directing (Acting)
  • Cinematography & lighting
  • On the set
  • Post-production
  • Composing
  • Festivals
  • Distribution, sales and marketing
  • Make-up and costumes
  • Editing
  • CGI
  • ETC

You get the idea. I haven't looked properly yet but I expect the posts are too specific.

Thanks in advance

Jay

dont waste your time trying to learn it all, learn something you are good at, find people for free to fill in the rest.

sometimes its best to let the guys who love that part of filming do their thing.

I just want to learn enough to sound like I know what I'm talking about. All the other guys at college sound like they're talking in a different language :S

well if you pick 2 or 3 and get really good at them then youl probably know more about those than people who choose to spread around :)

then people will come to you for your expertise, whereas only knowing a bit about each one is pointless.

not saying you cant do it well but its just time wasting, plus by working with others you will learn alot more coz they actually specified on that subject

Daymn, chimp. Is that a list you have been building for a
long time?

Jay, you now have everything you asked for. Click on each
link and study. It will take you a long time but when you're
done you will sound like you know what you're talking about.

Wow thanks for this Chimp. I've started already. Some of this stuff is amazing thanks. If you find anymore usefule links or books could you please let me know - I'd be ever so grateful :)

Screenwriting - Like any art you learn by doing. Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen were for the most part self taught.
Business & Legal - The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers, Clearance & Copyright by Michael C. Donaldson
Cinematography & lighting - Learn by doing
Composing - Learn by doing and studying other films.
Festivals - Don't waste your money on the big festivals that just take your money or the useless tiny ones that nobody cares about.
Distribution, sales and marketing - Movies sell themselves. Very few get distribution into whatever is left of physical stores. ANYBODY can get internet distribution without a traditional brick and mortar distributor.
Editing - Learn by buying Final Cut Studio and doing.
CGI - Learn by buying Adobe After Effects and doing. AutoDesk Maya for more advanced motion graphics.

Making movies is for independently wealthy people or people who are perfectly OK with being poor and struggling to try to squeeze blood out of a rock. This indie film business is a tough business. Not what it used to be 15 - 20 years ago.
