PAL and NTSC conversion

I am really trying to ring the best quality video for my money and cannot decide to record with the Canon XL1S PAL or the Canon XL1S NTSC version. I live in the U.S with our NTSC. However, PAL has more lines of resolution. If I get the PAL version of the camera would it work on U.S TVs and DVD players? Is there any way to record in PAL to get better resolution, and then transfer to NTSC?

No, PAL will not work on TVs in the US. It's a different signal. DVD players...hmmm...I guess you could get a multi-regional player....

I think, if you want to stick with PAL, the way to do it would be to just edit your footage with whatever program(I know for sure that Premiere will accept PAL format) and lay it back onto a PAL tape and get that transfered to an NTSC signal. There are places that will convert PAL to NTSC in the U.S. But as far as the image quality being better after the conversion, I'm not sure.
