Different Kinds of Mics

I am considering to buy my first external mic but im not sure which I should get.

Both of them have a mini jack and not a XLR output.

The first one is a gun mic that has mono sound.
The second one is a stereo mic that is Cardioid.

Im not sure which will help me out in the long run.
Also is a mono shutgun not good?
If i hang a cardioid onto a boom and bring it close to the actor will it give me a decent effect?

The connector on the mic you want will depend on the input you have access to. XLR can be adapted to a standard audio plug type of jack, but you're losing the benefit of running XLR at that point... if that matters to you, at this point it may not.
 
First, it is called a SHOTGUN mic. Shotgun (a.k.a. LOBAR) mics are a primary choice for outdoor shoots. They (should) have good off-axis rejection. A cardioid mic is a better choice for indoor shoots.

Just as there are specific lenses, lights, etc. for specific situation there are specific mics for specific applications.

For capturing dialog you almost always (99.99%) of the time want a mono mic. Stereo mics can lead to phase cancelation problems.
