Bad Times at the El Royale

3/5 stars, was fairly entertaining. With a more well rounded cast and a true auteur it could have been really fantastic.

Also saw:

Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight

4/5 - I loved this movie as a kid and saw it again. The first 30 minutes were a lot cheesier than I remember, but it is billed as comedy/horror. I think it is some of the best depictions of demons in a movie, certainly one of the best "raising a demon from hell," scenes I've seen. I really enjoy honest attempts at depicting the ultra supernatural, things that are ambitious and steeped in lore, brought to life on screen. It is the most interesting part of cinema to me, if it's done well. Billy Zane was badass in it, and Jada Pinkett is a cutie.

Yes the sheriff in Stranger Things was a breath of fresh air among all the idiot bumbling cops in horror films. I especially liked how they teased his first introduction that he was going to be incompetent and then he wakes up after his coffee

I know what you mean but I don't consider stranger things a horror show really, it was more like an adventure thriller.

i know what you mean too.
I watch very little horror because of all the terrible writing and stupid characters.

I don't suffer through that foolishness.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (2008)............ 9/10

I really enjoyed watching this movie. Part of the reason for the high rating is that the writer/producer of the film introduced it here where it was shown. I learned a lot about Johnny Cash and the Folsom prison during that time. I also enjoyed the animations and photography that was edited in the film.

Don't Breathe 3/5

I was expecting a horror film but this felt like a thriller.
The main characters feel like the bad guys and they're robbing a disabled guy.

It's different... the blind guy would typically be the main character in a horror film.
Instead he's trying to hunt down the intruders and we're supposed to be scared for them

A sad little tale so marvelously animated. Really gorgeous to look at. And there's a little warmth and fun in the story too.

Summer of 84 2/5

Started off okay but the scope of the story never expanded. Really wanted the world to open up and it never did.
It's like a modern take on rear window, trapped and watching the outside, but instead of a handicap being a broken leg the handicap is that he's a kid with stupid parents.

First Man

3/5. Good film, but too slow edited. Some really nice images and clever use of sound, but also some scenes felt a bit pointless. Tighter cut would work well in this film.

Lucky

4/5. This was also slow tempo film, but it didn't felt so boring at times than the First Man. Harry Dean Stanton's last film was a pleasure to see, specially since he was one of my favourite actors. Also it doesn't do any harm that the cast includes David Lynch, Ron Livingston and Tom Skerritt. I did like the ending quite much as well, when Harry broke the 4th wall and smiled to the camera. Perfect way to end the movie and eventually the career as well.

Last night I watched "The Other Side of Hope" by Aki Kaurismäki.
I'd rate it as a 3 out of 5 among Kaurismäkis films.

The Old Man & the Gun.................................. 9/10

Just watching it today. It's based on a true story which is wild. I thought the overall tone of the movie was down to earth. It didn't play up the robbery excitement like an Oceans 11 movie. I liked the different layers with the characters too. Good use of film-making tricks for a period piece. Lot's of details.

House of cards sixth season.

Absence of Kevin spacey has really changed the vibe of this show. For better or worse I still don't know. But the clair character has become less passive compared to previous seasons, which is a good thing. But she still remains passive for the most parts. They've added lots of music to the background, which makes the scenes more relatable.

Jobe'z World ........................ 7/10

Really funny. It has a B-Movie vibe to it. Some of the dialog was a bit over the top but overall the main character was a trip. Shot in NY too.
