Obscure underrated Horror movies for Halloween!

Some good choices! I particularly appreciate the Blind Dead nod...the scenes with the templars riding are brilliant and beautiful. I'm sure Peter Jackson intentionally referenced this with the Ringwraiths in LOTR.

Speaking of, we've all seen Dead Alive, right? If not (and if you like Evil Dead), fix that now.

One of my all-time favorites, Ghosthouse: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093090/ It's a bad movie, started out watching it in bad movie mode...and then there was some GENUINELY creepy stuff. I can think of 3 movies that have ever scared me. This was the only one that did after I was 10. (the others? Poltergeist when I was 8, and a tv commercial for Videodrome when I was 4. Both movies I love)

While diving through bad movies, I went through a "killer scarecrow" phase, jubillant that it was a trend for a little while. None are particularly good, most are fun (for a certain mindset) and this was my favorite http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411265/

I was also surprised to find that some people hadn't seen Prince of Darkness, which I've always thought was Carpenter's finest (along side In The Mouth of Madness). So not necessarily obscure, but more so than it should be.

After reading some of the 'favorites' of others in this thread, memories flood in, for I have seen almost all of the movies listed. I would like to second several -- if you have not seen them.

1979 Tourist Trap was one of the best psycho, serial-killer, deserted-house movies ever made. If I remember well, a reel-jumper trip. Chuck 'the Rifleman' Connors was awesome!

Alien, just watched it again several nights ago, (own it), still the masterful haunted house in space flick.

I enjoyed Bubba Ho-Tep a lot, (own it), but wouldn't call it horror.

Dark City, (own it) excellent but not horror.

Slither, (own it) a real tribute to 1960's style horror, science fiction with modem SFX and style.

Pandorium, (own it) great action, science-fiction.

Dead and Buried also very good story -- love to see it redone with today's SFX, actors and pace.

Legend of Hell House and Ghost Story and The Keep -- based on the books by (in order) Richard Matheson and Peter Staub and F. Paul Wilson, books are much better (the authors are excellent), movies not so much due to movie technology and mediocre scripts...

Zombie Strippers was just plain goofy.

I remember seeing Warhol's Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein on cable when I was a kid. Can't remember them very well at all. But I remember them being pretty far-out there. Wouldn't mind seeing them again.

I recently saw Slither, and agree that it's pretty entertaining. I was glad to find Nathan Fillion in it.

I'm sure The Host isn't obscure or underrated, but I'll mention it anyway in case it slips through the cracks. It's pretty entertaining too.]

[Edit]**********

Ghost Ship I didn't love where it went in the end. But still fairly entertaining throughout.

Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters) (2003) Not underrated, and I guess it's more of a suspense/thriller, but a good one. It's been some time since I saw it, but I remember it being a well crafted film.

Im a bit done with all the zombi stuff..its getting out of hand, so here are a few titles that are verry 80's no zombi's but verry cool!

Night of the Demons (1988) really done well low budget horror. good spfx makeup and a well put together story line! There are a few verry cool scenes in this one especially the Lenna Quigly one..and the burnt demon! good atmosphere and a verry good movie to watch halloween night! But make no mistake it is totaly 80's .

Oh, man, I've hardly seen any of these! Need to print a copy of this thread to take to the video store.

Not sure whether they're obscure or underrated, but - though I haven't seen either in a while - I remember liking The Believers and The People Under the Stairs.

The Believers (1987) starred Martin Sheen and was directed by the late, great John Schlesinger (of Midnight Cowboy and Marathon Man fame). If you're at all arachnophobic there's a scene you'll never forget -- my wife certainly hasn't.

The People Under the Stairs (1991) is one of Wes Craven's best movies, IMO, but you never seem to hear much about it. Brilliant satire, yet played dead straight. Need to see it again.

another few gems...

Paperhouse 1988 I only saw this once when it first came out..its more suspence but the visuals were really good...

Bad Dreams 1988..this was a big hit when it came out. I like it! but for some reason it has sliped into obscurity. Good sp/fx and good story line. really made well for its time.

Just Before Dawn 1981...yeah its a slasher type movie but it does have some really creepy moments..plus its a break from Jason, Freddy, and michael..i stll think of the movie when im in the deep woods every so often..lol

Not the best movie in the world, but it was before its time, This is a half documetry and story telling...actually the nature stuff is really good! Its a look only for curiosity, to see what came before Blair Witch.

Apologies if this one has been mentioned (and I missed it)

"Mill Of The Stone Women" is a 60's italian horror film that is quite psychological and a good (if little known) film.

I guess you have to go psychological to keep my interest in a horror film. I am over the monsters and slashers and zombies (pardon my zombie commercial  ) I do have a handful of zombie acceptions, so I don't really hate zombies anymore...

I tried, Tried, TRIED to watch Near Dark. 20 minutes in, I was rolling my eyes. It's the kiss of death for me if a film strikes me as stupid.

However….

Right At Your Door - very much a 'what would you do if' type of film

Bug - is there a bug or isn't there

Dog Soldiers - agreeing with voodoogmr

Master's of Horror's
John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns - love it, just what a horror film should be. Too bad it wasn't a feature

Kwaidan - 4 Japanese horror stories. You gotta go to Asia for real scares nowadays

Since I didn't like Shutter Island, I'll suggest "Angel Heart" by Alan Parker where the idea was handled better. Yes, I know S. I. was Scorsese....

Alien/Aliens. It's still scary, still brilliant. And H. R. Gieger is a freak.

...hmmm, what else....?

-- spinner

Black Sunday aka Mask of Satan
With the lovely Barbara Steel and Mario Bava direction...really good sets...interesting story line. Verry violent for its day. This is a must see classic

this movie sort of freaked me out as a kid...its a spooky little movie..nothing really special but back then the mind set of people and "paranormal events" are intersting to compare to nowadays with all the ghost hunter shows.

I hope you guys enjoyed this thread! if anyone watched any of the movies that were mentioned for the frist time please post your thoughts!

While drunk, I've found a particular love for the House on Haunted Hill remake (love the original too) and High Spirits. I love High Spirits. Great film...anything Neil Jordan is great, but I do have a particular love for ghost stories....

A bit of a mind trip..freaky like people under the stairs but it does have the 80's feel to it. Great movie for Halloween night

Happy Halloween everyone and happy viewing!!!!

Last night I was at The Dungeon (a bar in the French Quarter) and they had on a local slasher flick, "Goregasm". The MC is called 'The Dick Faced Killer'. It is just as bad (in a good way) as it seems. In all honesty, it's about one third of the way to a soft core porn flick with truck loads of gratuitous violence.
