Question about music for a festival/competition

Hello,

Right now I make my films for a purely personal reason. I just love making them and watching them, so I just use songs from other movies soundtracks etc. However as I am getting more and more into making movies I am wondering if I decide to enter a film into a competition or festival etc, do I need to use original music or can I use royalty free music? I guess what I'm asking is, is a film festival or competition considered commercial because you can win money? You're not really selling it....anyway any help is appreciated.

The right to copy (copyright) means you need permission
to use the work. Commercial or not, selling it or not.

Most festivals do not allow you to use music you don't have
the right to use. Original music is will be acceptable. If you
purchase the correct rights to royalty free music, that will
be acceptable, too.
