> VOD Indie Film Distribution Exploration

Alright, with grrrrreat reluctance I'm beginning a new thread with my investigation notes about video-on-demand.
I wanted to just attach it to the other thread as a minor tangent, but this just keeps getting hairier and hairier demanding it's own thread. Sorry :(

Although this first post is a C&P regurgitation of the last info from another thread subsequent posts will highlight boiled down items of interest.
(IOW, there's a big difference between writing copy to fill collumn inches and writing to slam home crude education - which is my preferred approach: "Ten words or less. What?!"

Subsequent posts will examine individual articles begining with that FilmThreat Going Bionic series.

Have fun. :)

Another interesting VOD article:
Dated - Fall 2009 http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/issues/fall2009/industry-beat.php

By all accounts, the most successful VOD films fall into one of a few categories, horror-thrillers (Dark Mirror, Magnolia's Surveillance or The Mutant Chronicles), sexy stuff (like some of IFC's racy French fare) or star-studded comedies (IFC's I Hate Valentine's Day, starring the leads from My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

"The films working on cable VOD are going to be the films that people want to watch with other people, things that are provocative, either from a violence or stylish sense, or a titillating standpoint,"

It appears that if you can skip the dubious expense of a questionable theatrical release, the title and description are intriguing enough, that VOD only distribution may be fairly viable.

Surprisingly some filmmakers are ending up in better fiscal shape by bypassing the theatrical route. Joe Swanberg says the VOD performance for his latest film, Alexander the Last, was similar to his previous Hannah Takes the Stairs. Both were released on IFC with grosses around $250,000. But Alexander may turn out to be significantly more profitable because the higher expenses associated with Hannah's theatrical release ate up all of its VOD proceeds.

And another "more" current article:
Dated - Jun 29, 2010 http://www.filmthreat.com/features/22975/

Finding a way to get your film noticed can be as hard, or harder, than finding the money to make your film in the first place. Of course having certain elements like a notable cast and a “bionic” genre (i.e. action, sci-fi and thriller) will certainly help. But, you should have a clear idea about who your audience is and how you can exploit your product to them through the correct V.O.D. platform.

2) People under the age of 25 buy most of the content sold to cell phones.

Since most contracts with V.O.D. suppliers are non-exclusive, your distributor should exploit your film to multiple suppliers. Let me just clarify that point: Your contract with your distributor is always exclusive, but their contract with V.O.D. suppliers is usually non-exclusive. This means you can have your film available to multiple V.O.D. suppliers if it makes sense to do so.

Cool. There's a series: http://www.filmthreat.com/page/7/?s="going+bionic"

Another informative "definitions of VOD" article:

Good Lord.
The amount of data to learn on this subject is... deep enough to drown in.
Looks like a chock-load of undated FREE RESOURCES in that first left column block: http://www.filmspecific.com/public/main.cfm

I think this is enough to keep me busy for a week.
(BTW, did I ever tell you guys that the reason I got interested in filmmaking is because I DON'T like reading anymore, especially when a book takes six or more hours to convey what a film can do in under two hours? And what am I doing a sh!t load of now? Yuk yuk yuk. Life is funny).

I noticed that many of these film got god-awful ratings on IMDb (yes, I know they can be skewed).
Yup, and at some point I'd like to get my hands on a substantial amount of comprehensive (rather than anecdotal) "distribution" deal figures.

My business sense tells me that most of the content providers (AKA filmmaker/producers) probably don't get paid a dime up front, maybe some get token checks, and all the marketing & promotion responsibilty remains with the content providers.
"Film submissions should include a DVD screener along with a press kit and/or any other materials and should be sent to our corporate office at the address below."

The "distributor" largely just provides a warehousing platform and film bundle deals.
I don't think many of these lo/no budget content providers are getting ten, twenty, fifty-thousand dollar checks to distribute these films.:no:

"Distribution" isn't the end-all-be-all that it may sound like, much like "being published" sounds much better than it may actually be considering the prevalence of print on demand self publishing these days.

Another number I look at with those IMDB ratings is the number of users.
A one or two year old film with less than a dozen user vote ratings doesn't look all that great to me.

Horrible film. Large number of user votes. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1530509/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4

Why do all of these (may I call them for what they probably likely are?) cr@p films (and you know I've done my homework to defend that opinion based on the limited information provided) have so few user votings and reviews?
For really?
Most of them have only a few dozen user votes, good or bad. Just as many have less than a dozen votes as those that have only a few hundred votes.

Sad.

Sad, sad, sad.

However, it does go to show that, all things being equal, a distributor like Maxim Media may very well pick up a film that the content providers have no clue how to market & promote.

Furthermore, I'm of the opinion that I already know that M&P/P&A burden falls on me, and that if I can't bring my film to the attention of a "significant" audience then I probably shouldn't have spent any "significant" time writing/directing/producing it.:no:

I haven't drunk the "art for art's sake" kool aid. LOL!

Looking at the history of this company I think this is the model that many "distributors" follow: start off with dirt cheap cr@p films until they can afford to start distributing films of greater production value and business worth.
Lionsgate and Magnet/Magnolia used to be associated with cr@p films, but not anymore.

Very nice: http://www.godigitalvod.com/

General observations:
  1. Yeah, this pretty much confirms that you're pretty much 100% responsible for marketing & promoting your own film.
  2. Just because a distributor agrees to distribute your film doesn't really mean your product is going to figuratively "fly off the shelves" and the Benjis start rolling in. Pfft. No. That ain't happening.
  3. With this kind of distribution you're essentially a vendor buying a booth at a flea market, like everyone else.
Yeah, you'd better have something interesting enough for casual/incidental passersby to notice and buy - or - let a greater number of people know that you're even AT the flea market in a booth & hope they don't get distracted on the way there.
  4. Again, budget ≠ views/votes/merit/appreciation.
Big budget films suck just as much as lo/no budget films.
And the inverse, lo/no budget films can be just as appreciated as big budget films.

Yep.
See post #123 above.
More of the same observations.

I'm looking for a distributor that markets, not hosts or squats on rights.

Lotta LGBT content.
Poor promotion/marketing.
Yet another host site.

>> Got 'Screen Media Films' done: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...WGNZNExVQVRnMkFEbDUxRldlSHc&usp=sharing#gid=5

This distributor appears to put some effort into promoting their films.

Umm... Nope.
Not gonna do any spreadsheet for this:
Code:
1. The Dead Want Women (2012) (V) ... Distributor (2012) (USA) (DVD)
2. DevilDolls (2012) (V) ... Distributor (2012) (worldwide) (DVD)
3. Killer Eye: Halloween Haunt (2011) ... Distributor (2011) (worldwide) (DVD)
4. Killjoy 3 (2010) (V) ... Distributor (2010) (USA) (all media)
5. Puppet Master: Axis of Evil (2010) (V) ... Distributor (2010) (worldwide) (all media)
6. Demonic Toys: Personal Demons (2010) (V) ... Distributor (2009) (worldwide) (all media)
In almost three years that's all they've distributed.

And you know why?
Here's why.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Moon_Entertainment

It's led by a near-nutty fellow doing... something, but I'm sure he's living comfortably on his residuals and steady flow of income from past work.
Can't really complain about that.

From that wiki description he's something of a Lloyd Kaufman-esque guy, and that's cool, but just demands way more energy than even I have.

I think he's more interested in producing and distributing his own stuff, and not so much interested in carrying anyone else's, which actually is kinda sorta what I myself have in mind. :)
That, and become a copyright troll!

Whatever.

WTH happened?
(FWIW, I'm finding these distributors off the backs of DVDs at my local Dollar General stores and from the $5 DVD bin @ WalMart.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CodeBlack_Entertainment
"CodeBlack Entertainment (CodeBlack) is the first independent, vertically integrated African-American-owned film studio, actively engaged in the business of feature film production, film distribution, worldwide DVD and digital assets distribution, urban marketing consulting and a production of programs for television broadcast and syndication."

I love vertical integration.

Alright.
Skipping 'Echo Bridge' and moving onto 'First Look Home Entertainment'
http://www.imdb.com/company/co0199312/?ref_=fn_al_co_1

Sh!t.
Looks like they went out of business, noting since 2009, which might explain why I found this distributor's products at DollarTree!

No straight wiki on them...
Lettuce snoop around some more... http://biz.yahoo.com/ic/109/109502.html
"First Look Home Entertainment (FLHE), formerly Ventura Home Entertainment, is a provider of sales, distribution, marketing, and financing services for producers and studios in the home entertainment marketplace. Its library of more than 1,000 titles includes movies, animé, classic TV, fitness videos, cult and foreign films, and other specialty/niche products. FLHE supplies wholesale, retail, catalog, and e-commerce businesses. The company is a subsidiary of First Look Studios. It was founded in 1993 by former CEO Larry Hayes as Ventura Distribution. In 2006 First Look purchased Ventura's assets in order to create its own home entertainment business."
Okay. FLS is at wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Look_Studios
They reference First Look International: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0010508/

THAT looks a little better.

It's still not impressive, and in fact, still looks like another legacy income stream business model rather than an actively growth oriented business model.

Alright, back to 'Echo Bridge' then 'Mill Creek'...

I wanna develop a comparison base of limited release films to metric off of for how well these market-it-yourself so-called "distributors" (they're hosts, really) provide any measure of benefit.

'The Lifeguard' I've recently heard of and from a basic understanding of the story's premise am not surprised it's in limited release.
But this is surprising:

http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Lifeguard-The
Whah... ? No information atoll?
Oh, bugger! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lifeguard Straight to video. :(
Well, that's gotta hurt Kristen's cute little feelings.
Nope. I think she's over it. http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view3/3509925/kristen-bell-o.gif

Hmm... lettuce see if we can find some limited release films here:
http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/cha...2=domestic&yr=2012&sort=open&order=ASC&p=.htm

Most films have pretty much run their course after eight to ten weeks, so no matter the premier date in 2012 whatever it was ever going to do has pretty much been done.

So, lettuce begin with those first thirty and start our sample batch from that.
Work In Progress: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsBznn8D13zOdHNVMjdCRnVCTU95TXk2Y2NDd3JmS3c&usp=sharing

Preliminary observations:
OMG! Sh!tty little cr@ppy films with only a few theatrical showings are getting several thousand IMDB users!
WTH are these so-called (hosting) distributors doing with these films that warrant only a few dozen IMDB users?!
OMG! It's almost heartbreaking! Almost.

I'm also surprised some/many of these films have no distributor willing to pick up their U.S. DVD rights.

>> NOTE: I'm excluding foreign films since their primary audience is non-U.S. which renders useless revenue and user data, and documentaries since those are kinda specialty non-narrative films which renders useless data. And animations, too.

VOD For Filmmakers

Hello,
I wonder if I might be able to ask for your assistance. The organisation I work for has launched a digital download/VOD solution tailored for independent filmmakers to sell their films online. With platforms such as Amazon, Netflix, Blink Box and Love Film being dominated by Hollywood blockbusters, independent filmmakers are being squeezed out of the market place.
I feel it is of great importance to gain an understanding as to what independent filmmakers would want from a VOD service.
We would very much appreciate your input in this process and ask you to kindly to complete a very quick survey to assist us in tailoring this service to your needs?

Thank you in advance for your support.

Indie filmmakers want from their VOD service sensible assurance and evidence that the VOD service is actively marketing the indie films it "hosts" to appropriate potential audience markets.

Indie filmmakers want to see that the VOD service is earning their revenue percentage, not just acting as yet another content aggregator.

If 100% of the marketing and promotion are from the filmmaker's efforts then the aggregator, the hosting VOD service, receives the disproportionate benefit.

Survey taken, as well. :)
