MY first recommendation would be to start reading about how to make film, anything you can get your hands on. Learn learn learn. Then with that newly discovered knowledge, watch some of your favorite films, ones you have already seen so you won't be distracted by somebody new. Start watching for how the filmmakers stayed with, bent, or completely broke all the rules and techniques you just read about. Understand why a shot or a cut was chosen where it was chosen. There's so much more but I have to get ready for work.
