filming in Egypt

I have actually always wanted to visit Egypt, see the pyramids, perhaps shoot a short there some day. But I worry, perhaps for valid or invalid reasons, about getting kidnapped and being beheaded or whatever. How safe is it to go to Egypt as an American?
