Lens filter buying advice - are they specific or general?

Evening everyone (from the UK),

I am filming outside with my Panasonic Lumix G7 so I wish to get some filters to help me combat the effects of harsh sunlight from the midday sun.

I was wondering if lens filters are specific, general or can be both?

You may just need an ND (neutral density) filter to cut down the light. There are lots of different filters on the market. Check out TIFFEN filters or SCHNEIDER filters to get an idea of what's out there. You will be surprised. There are other options such as shooting in back light, etc.
