Special effects question

One of the special effects artist came to our school as a guest lecture. He discussed a lot about his craft. He mentioned that he prefers miniatures over a scale model for specialty items like spaceship etc.

What is the difference between miniatures and scale models? (I thought miniatures and scale models are just the same - replica of actual items but much smaller in size).

Thanks.

The model-makers at WETA Workshop, on the Lord of the Rings films, referred to their models as "Big'atures," because the ultimate size of most of them filled out an entire sound-stage in some cases.

The purported size of the actual locations and monuments were so massive within the stories that even scale models had to be constructed in massive sizes in order to get the right sense of realism, texture, and in some cases weight (such as when Gondor was being bombarded by chuncs of other ruined buildings flung by catapults).

Scale models are probably more along the lines of 1/2 or 1/4th scale, where as miniatures are vastly smaller by comparison. At least I'd imagine that's the main difference.
