Hello, from London!

Hi Guys,

Just singed up, im a avid film maker who studied at college for two years and went to university. My only real use of cameras was Cannon XL1's using MiniDV.

Im writing a show at the moment, and have a few questions..

Firstly, i've always edited using adobe Premiere on windows. Easy stuff, but found it very basic and windows didn't like running premiere very much, lol.
What's the best editing system, and would it be to run it on a mac?

Secondly, MiniDV has such a cheap look. What is the best sort of format to go with to get a decent look. Bearing in mind that film would be out of budget. What was Jackass / Viva La Bam filmed with? Thats the type of look im going for?

Thanks in advance.

Reece

First of all, not all minidv is cheap looking. That's not correct. It depends on the person behind the camera as much as the camera. The XL1 is a broadcast quality camera and i wouldnt be surprised if those shows used one.

The best format for anyone is the one they can afford.

To be honest, the story of your show is the most important thing.

Sorry i can't help with editing software.

Welcome to the Thunderdome!

I think XL1 footage looks great. It's not HD, maybe that's what you mean by cheap looking. According to this link, it appears "Jackass" used cameras just like the XL1 (or of lesser quality, on some of their shots). This link is an advert for Magic Bullet software, but it looks legit to me.

As for software, I like Premiere. And, if it's not running smoothly on your PC, I'd investigate hardware/software compatibility.

I'm not a Mac guy. For what it's worth, as far as I know, Mac people are all about Final Cut.

Best of luck!

Hi guys, thanks for replys!

As for mini dv, you say that jackass uses this format but how comes they don't have the 'home video' look?

Also what do MTV use to film? MiniDV?
I understand it's what you can afford, but what's the best camera/format for HD?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what MTV uses. However, according to that link I shared, "Jackass" got it's nice look in post-production. Their footage looks good, but it doesn't look THAT good. I think it's totally believeable that they used relatively inexpensive miniDV cameras.

28 DAYS LATER - THE RAGE was filmed with a canon XL1 and it doesn't have the 'home video' look. I think your thinking of VHS or cheap consumer type cameras.

I believe you should read up on the whole 'film look' debate.

So much of the film look is about mise en scene, the lighting, camera movement and good framing.

The camera itself just captures all that other hard work, so if you do everything else right, you could shoot on VHS and it would have the film look.
