Marketing a movie isn't rocket science: The movie sells itself or it doesn't when entered in festivals, presented to distributors, and when the trailer is seen on YouTube. It helps greatly to have someone with box office draw in your movie. Money helps sell a movie, but for the vast majority of indie filmmakers, they'll be throwing away their money by paying for advertising. There's 17,000 movies released each year. Good luck floating to the top.
