How much / what do you know about your characters before beginning the first draft?

So far, I've co-written two feature-length screenplays and a short. Before starting the first draft, we had everything figured out with backstory notes, a detailed outline, and scene cards. This prep took us months. The first draft was produced in about a week, or two.
Remember, there's no 'correct' way to write so just start writing. You'll discover your own method as you go.

That's a bad sign to me but I'm nobody.
Not about how many drafts you do, but what you have in your last. Some stuff do change the world...
The more you know, the easier it is to draw from when it comes to your character's struggles and getting over them. I've only done short stories, but have some backstory a few years prior definitely help.
