A short I am making features a nightmare scene in which I want to feature a light bulb exploding, or blowing, does anyone have any tips on how to achieve this in a controlled way?

Maybe try shooting it with a BB gun? On a pro set the use little electronic hammers for window breaks that you can cue with a switch.
How accurate are you with a sling shot? How big a projectile will
you need to break a light bulb? Wouldn't it show up on screen?
If you don't need to show the glass breaking you can do this with
a dimmer and sound efx.

If we see the explosion, bb gun or pellet gun. If we don't. Rik's suggestion is the best.
as a professional i would turn off my lights and walk off the set if a real gun was there ...

try soaking the light in dry ice to get it really cold then insert it in the plug and switch it on....should go pop....
