watch A Future of Fortune (Short Film)

I haven't had much views or feedback on a short film I worked on a little over a year ago.

Film Synopsis:
This is a story about a character who lives his life by what a fortune cookie tells him. He begins to realize the positive messages that he gets from every fortune cookie read. The character then starts to take for granted the messages from the fortune cookies, by taking advantage of situations to better himself. The problem only gets worse by reading more than one a day believing the answers are in the cookies. Throughout the story the fortune cookies lead the character to new locations, new characters, and new problems. Eventually the character tries to backtrack his footsteps by piecing together the fortune cookies he's already read. This eventually leads the character to realize there was a deeper meaning beyond the messages from the fortune cookies. He realizes A Future of Fortune only comes to those who are patient enough to wait for destiny.

Length: Approx. 20 Min

I'd appreciate any feedback you have for me. What you liked, what you disliked and what you hated. I will start off with my own criticism and say that as the editor I'm not very happy how I put it together. I think it might be too slow and needs some background music for scenes such as the dinner conversation. No excuses but this was for a student project and we were only able to shoot/edit this in about a weeks time. Ok enough of me, what did you think? or did you only get as far as the trailer?

A week is not nearly enough time for a first-time student filmmaker to shoot and edit a 20-minute film. If that was the actual assignment, your teacher should have their liscence revoked. To be frank, it's difficult for me to critique this, cuz there's just too much to critique. Background music ain't gonna help this thing out.

Basically, I feel like you need to start back at square-one. Start with the most basics of the basics. And I don't say that because I think you're inept, or anything insulting like that. I say that because that's how I started. Go back again, and start small. 20-minutes is really big. Make something that's a minute long. Focus on learning how to compose a shot. Learn and practice the 30-degree rule, learn how to cut on action.

This first project that you did -- you bit off way too much. Next time -- baby-steps. And have fun with it. Best of luck.

We were given about a month to do this but the crew and cast could mostly meet up all together during one weekend. Something I thought was done best was the composition of the shots. The problem I think is that they were all still shots. It would of been helpful too if the house was scouted out first to have a better idea ahead of time where to place the camera. I agree 20 minutes is too long, this was supposed to be up to 10 minutes long. By the time I was done with the first cut it was due and the length ended up being 20 minutes. I think you're right as well about going back to square-one. I had originally wrote the idea as a dark, experimental film and it became some sort of romantic short.
