Sound Editing and FCP

I am new to FCP and am trying to work out multiple shot sequences with a single audio track. Can you separate the audio from video if recorded through the camera or does audio need to come from an external recording device and be synced? Thanks.

You can work either way. By default, the audio will import synched to the video if it was recorded in camera.

If you have a separate audio track, you can simply drop the clip into the timeline below the last audio track and it will make a new track/stereo track pair for you. You can then slide left and right to synch to the main audio (easiest if you've used a clapboard on set). You can then separate the other audio by either turning off the track (glowy green indicator on left of each track - just click to turn off the track altogether) or

On individual clips by selecting the clip in the timeline and unlinking the audio from the video (apple-L - they relink the same, select both, then hit the keystroke again). You are then free to delete the audio if you'd like (make sure to deselect the video portion before hitting delete).
