Move to LA to become a filmmaker???

Hello...i have a few questions and didn't really know they would fit in which section of the forum....

I'm an aspiring filmmaker from India. Currently i'm working as an assistant director.

the thing is that most of my family has moved to USA... i.e. my Aunts, uncles, cousins...... now they want me to join them there and since they all live in California they said i could join a film school there and work there......

i'm very keen aswell..... but moving to an entirely different place can be life changing..... plus i dont know much about LA..... i've heard its not safe for young girls like myself..... i'm 22 btw.......

i was wondering if i go there should i join a film school..would that help?? Would an outsider like me really find any work in Hollywood???

and yes then is LA the best place to stay or i should try film schools in other parts of the country????

also all the complications related to it...please help...its a big big decision for me and i'm in such a turmoil....

SF is Hell expensive, but it's a great city and worth it.

It CAN be hell expensive. You can easily feed yourself on $400 a month. That's 80 Subway foot long sandwiches or 800 Del Taco tacos.

The LA Times has an article on people leaving because of the high cost of living, which is why I've been hesitating about putting my prodco there.

I called. For the month of February 2012 the quote was $620 per week.
$2,480 for the month.

The SRO's that offer the pricing you're quoting are ... significantly less nice ... than that joint.

I do agree you can feed yourself for $400/month, but your listed example is no way to eat! :lol:

To continue this thread, the LA Times has consistently been saying that location shoots in the city is falling, as companies go to other low-tax locations.

We're just recovering from the Great Recession, so it's hard to tell, but California may have to deal with its tax structure if it wants to remain the film capital of the world.

I'd say stay in India until you finish your work there. Whenever you feel ready to go to LA, go for it, it's the best place to pitch movies, especially with Hollywood so close.
