I use magic lantern. If you shut off your Auto Gain Control and turn down the digital gain to zero, and lower your analog gain control to about 10dB, you can have another source of usable backup audio.
If I were you I'd take your canon to the store and do some sort of test shot at the store, and if you find no difference between the footage, then that makes the Nikon an option to.
