Getting the best from Rode Video Mic?

Hi, I have a RVM into a Zoom H1 and to be honest I'm not over pleased at the amount of noise I'm getting. Is there some setting I'm missing? Is there a computer program setting that can reduce the noise? I'm using Sony vegas.

ADD ON:

The zoom h1 makes a faint pulsing noise (like a heartbeat) when recording WAV. has anyone experienced this and know of a way to rid of it?

Where are you placing the mic ? Most important....if you set the mic levels at 100% you will get more noise..fact. Im not saying set it at 30% but as high as you can get w/o noise. Mic placement is #1 in the whole equation.

Good that you are seeing improvements whatever settings, many of us Indies have the mic too far away is the biggest issue is what I have learned, I set the mic waaaay to far away and quality suffered in all of my early projects.

well i assumed that it reduces any hiss so i thought run my mic into it and run the JL into the zoom...
