Hollywood grade camera equitment

Hey, does anyone have any links to stores renting or selling "Hollywood grade film equipment" you know, the place where major studios buy or rent their stuff from?

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Oh Wow! Great thanks.

I was also, wondering if a amateur like me could shoot and operate the Arri D-21 camera system, I'm not planning to shoot with it anytime soon, :), but I was just wondering what technical skills it will take to use it. Thanks :)

If by “beginners” you mean a camera that pretty much anyone can
pick up, point and shoot - no. The reason there is a director of
photography on professional shoots is because it is a very
specialized craft that takes a skilled person. Knowing and
understanding all the aspects of a professional camera is just one
part of being a good DP. But an important part.

If you are leaning towards being a DP then you should start with
what is commonly called a “prosumer” camera. Learn about every
aspect of photography and work your way up. If you are a director
you should find someone who is learning to be a DP.

A fully equipped RED has quite a learning curve. I’ve been a
camera operator for many years; it’s how I make part of my living.
Both of my experiences with the RED were very difficult. And I’ve
used the Arri D20.

So where do you stand, torn? Are you a director who wants to be
the DP on your movie? Are you learning to be a DP? Are you willing
to start at the bottom and work your way up to pro equipment or
do you just want to have the top of the line equipment right away?

This thread cracks me up..

Are there any pro camera's for beginners?

How about:

Are there any pro Guitars for beginners?

Are there any pro fighter planes for someone whose never flown before?

Are there any great loans for someone whose doesn't know what a "mortage" is?

In fairness, I totally get the wanting top gear right away, and if you can afford it, and some schooling to go with it.. go for it..

http://www.reducation.net/

Gear, school and a bit of experience ...

However, if you spend that same money on a something a little less TOP END.. like the pro camcorders by Panasonic etc, you can have enough money left OVER to hire a DP for a movie, and pay him extra to TEACH you how to use it!

In fairness, it’s always good to ask the question.

If you are a beginning guitar player it is very helpful to know
about the top of the line guitars the pros use. The other two
analogies I don’t quite understand.

To me it seems you are dismissing the question itself. I know this
isn’t the case because I know your posts. You advice is sound, I
just don’t see how asking about pro cameras for beginners funny. I
know when I picked up my first 8mm camera I immediately started
thinking about what the pros use. I remember finding a book in the
library (anyone under 30 remember those?) with pictures of
professional cameras. I was in heaven!

I remember books... I ... oh crap, you said under 30 :P A little super 8mm filmmaking book intro'd me to special effects techniques, filmming jumping off a wall backwards, then playing it in reverse and they jump up a huge wall... editing tricks etc.

It all still applies, don't ever discount any books (free access to local state university libraries anyone?) regardless their age... light has been around for a while as has our perception of the world... it all predates digital ;)
