Shooting with a camcorder

Hi guys!I am newbie film director and I have 16 years old, I could not aford a dslr camera so I bought a camcorder a canon legria hf r306 it has a full hd definition but I think is good enough for filmmaking. What Technics do you think I should consider to compensate the lack of quality of my camera?

1. Stop thinking of your camera as lacking in quality. I just won $400 at a festival for a movie I made using a similar camera. If it captures images, it's a fine tool for making a movie.

2. LIGHTING! Search these forums and elsewhere for as much info on lighting as you can find. Lighting is the first ingredient to a well-photographed scene. Camera is further down the list.

3. COMPOSITION! Learn how to compose a shot, dividing your frame into thirds and whatnot. Research composition.

Bottom line: your camera is a fine tool. Learn it inside and out.

Did you buy it brand new or used?

It has no filter threads and no mic jack.
Otherwise it's a fine enough camera.

If brand new out of the box I'd return it and get something with filter threads then pop on a UV filter at a minimum.
The mic jack is an extra, but a good extra.

Just looked through the http://www.pixmania.co.uk/ selection and for the money there isn't anything with a lens filter. Sorry.

General call out to IT UKers: Can someone here recommend an inexpensive PAL camera/camcorder with a filter ring?

Where are you going to plug the mic ? You'll need a recorder with the mic. At think mic + rec will cost at least $200.

if it's too expensive for you, do silent movies.

Well... the camera has no mic jack, so you're really looking at buying both a mic + digital recorder, additionally.

Considering the combined price and likely price range you may be better off returning the 306 and getting a camera with a mic jack + mic.

Any off camera recorder in this price range isn't going to be a worthy improvement over what the 306 can record itself.

Alright, I just looked again.
You guys got nothin' over there. :grrr::grumpy:

Just get a cheapo digital recorder and almost any microphone with a >2m cord and you'll be doing as good as you can, all things considered.

Can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, but you can make a decent (yet weird) wallet!

The camera is ok and it's all you need for now. Start by getting some inexpensive lights and make short movies to learn.
