I'd say pretty much everything he said is spot on, whether talking about cinematography or most other careers. The market has already changed drastically, and isn't likely to improve, so you have to adapt the way you plan a career to the new circumstances. And as someone who has freelanced for his entire career I can also say the income cap thing is a real issue - as long as your income is based on the number of hours you personally spend working there is a hard limit to how much you'll can make. It also means the more income you've got, the less time you have to enjoy it - and when you have time it's generally because you're not working, so you don't want to spend too much because you may not know when the next job will come along. If you're going to go that route you need to find ways to generate passive income.
