Writer's Block.

Here's the logline of the Screenplay which I'm in the process of writing

Logline: A young writer suffers from writer’s block after losing his parents in an accident. Having a miserable writing career, he finds out the real truth behind his parent’s death and the consequence’s that cure him from writer’s block.

What do you guys think about it?

Hollywood biz based stories are narcissistic.

Make the protag anyone else but a writer, director, film student.

A golfer that can't swing straight.
A dancer that can't dance.
A quarterback that can't throw.
A hitman that can't kill.
A oboe player that can't blow.
A porn star that can't get it up.
Anything.

Just not another writer/filmmaker woe-is-me story.

this two would be much more interesting:

A oboe player that can't get it up.
A porn star that can't blow.

:D

I agree; write the story then change the profession of the character. Writing about writing always comes across as very masturbatory. There are, of course, exceptions (Adaptation for example), but for the most part, as ray said, the story would work just as well with a different coat of paint on the characters. Writing is almost always stronger through metaphor...use it!

Songs about writing songs are also a big pet peeve of mine. It annoys me in song I would otherwise enjoy.

But that's a bit too literal.. I always took that advice as an emotional compass.

If that was the case we d never have scifi genre :) unless lucas is truely space fighter pilot!

Don't they say write what you know? He knows writing does he not?

It can be a little more generic.

Why not make it a straight mystery/thriller, the search for the truth about his parents death? Why complicate it with the writers block sub-plot? Now you have a better selection of resolutions - they weren't his parents; they adopted him or kidnapped him, for example. Or he finds out they were undercover operatives for... Or he discovers that he's nuts and that he killed them. Then there is the plethora of supernatural events...

There are exciting, interesting or funny movies about writers. Like Misery or almost every Woody Allen Movie ever made. However, a movie about a writer meeting a psychotic fan or falling in love (Shakespear in Love") is interesting. A movie about a writer sitting around not able to write ,hopelessly gazing at a computer screen sounds kinda dull. Finding out the truth about your parents death can be interesting. I suppose it's not what a character's profession but what they do in the story that makes the film watchable.

Personally, I LOVE movies about writers & filmmaking, but only if they are written by experienced insiders. The same goes for political thrillers and romantic comedies. Their understanding of the genre nuances shows the audience an expertise on the subject and adds credibility to the work. The point is, they actually do write what they know, because life experience trumps research every time.

I'm an idiot, so I write about idiots :hmm:

Here's an idea: Make it an actual writer's block. Kinda like the shoe police put on cars. So this guy has a writer's block encasing his prefered writing aparatus and he must find a way to get it off. Idea!?!?!?! :)

Your log line is waaay too long.

How about: A failed writer must discovery the truth about his parents death to releave his anterograde amnesia.
